I'm not a pipe-maker, but speak with LOTS of them, since you are going to be smoke'in her you might want to use a different type of stain on the pipe, they have them over at http://www.pipemakers.org/

I know about the leather dyes, but since I am only staining the outside of the pipe, not the inside bowl, what's the harm?? Will it catch on fire if it gets too hot....or will the stain come off because of the heat??

http://www.pipemakers.org is selling leather dyes (not sure if they are alcohol-based or not) but pipe-makers have told me they like to use alcohol-based stains on their pipes :puffpipe:

I guess I am going to have to sacrifice 1 pipe for this experiment and see what happens when you use MINIWAX for staining...

The only possible problem I see is that most Minwax stains contain very thin varnish. It may cause the pipe to smoke a bit hotter. The reason for the use of leather dye is that it is a dye and not a stain.

Greetings,
Absolutely NOT! Minwax is oil based, and stinks to high heaven. It will penetrate the briar, and the results will be disaster. I use Minwax stain on the display boxes for my Blandings Collection, and have to let them dry for 2 weeks to allow the odor to dissapate. Otherwise the pipes within will pick up the smell.
ONLY use alcohol based stains like Fiebing's leather dye or powered stains thinned with denatured alcohol. Alcohol evaporates and leaves no residual odor.
Minwax oil-based stains are a good product-for furniture-NOT for pipes.

What Cooper said! You can get Fiebing's at your local shoe or leather work shop. Any color you want.

CA Cooper is right. That's what I get for posting when I am half asleep. Keep oil based stains strictly for furnishings.
