Many years ago my brother in law gave me a Mini Maglite (2xAA battery size) which I treasured and still do.

Back then it lived with my tool roll under the seat of my Suzuki motorcycle and came in great handy once when I needed to change my headlight bulb in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere one time.

Anyway, I dug it out the other day and switched it on....it still worked after many years of no use though it was just a glimmer due to dying batteries. It was then I recalled reading about an LED conversion kit which replaces the tiny filament bulb with an even smaller LED that was available so I went straight on to Amazon and now I'm £11:50 poorer but by all accounts it's a huge improvement on the original bulb set up.

Has anyone here gone the Maglite conversion route? I believe they're available for all Maglites but careful attention needs to be payed to get the right bulb for the right torch.

By the way, it wasn't until I'd had the torch for some while that my brother in law told me about the spare bulb held in the screw off endpiece....how clever was that!

Welcome to the 21st Century jay!! ?
The best led torches I've got are rechargeable ones, 12/24 volt. Plug in either to ones car or lorry & never have to worry about batteries ever again.

Simon, I had (gave away recently) a large handheld rechargeable torch that weighed a ton. That had a halogen filament bulb.

On the instructions it said 'under no circumstances should you shine the light into the eyes'. First thing I did after charging it up for the first time was look at it! I was blind for about 20 seconds!!!

Was more like a car headlight with a handle, incredibly bright.

Regards,

Jay.

I have a mini mag light that came with the led bulb. I keep that in my maxpedition mini organizer in my jeep. The one I keep on my "skinth" on my belt is the stream light microstream. One AAA battery. So much power from a tiny flashlight.

Luckily, a co-worker was a trained Maglite repair rep. I swapped to the new bulb when it became available. On duty I carried a six cell, rechargeable, as it was very versatile, if you get my drift.
Yes, around here they called them “knockers”.

Well my mini Maglite LED conversion bulb arrived this morning.

A real pig to extract it from the plastic bubble which held it but once extracted I just pulled out the old bulb and slotted the LED straight in.

What an amazing difference, considering the two AA batteries are at least three years old and pretty worn out the LED was super bright! I'll try it with two fresh batteries later just to test how bright it can go.

The best £11:50 I spent in a long while.

Regards,

Jay.

I just checked Amazon, $65 for the multi-cell LED conversion, yikes!
I had 3 D cell maglights and just tossed all of them, too heavy and not bright enough.
Two, 1000 Lumen LED rechargeable flashlights from Amazon are $26. These things weight next to nothing.

I have an Anker rechargeable flashlight that I found in a hotel parking lot last winter, it is amazing, small, light and powerful.

Unless, like Jay, you have a sentimental attachment to a Maglight, I see no reason to save them.

Al, that is silly expensive at $65

A few years ago I was in an electrical shop buying something or other and on the counter they had these aluminium bodied 12 LED torches that take 3 AAA batteries and they were something like £6.

I thought they'd likely be junk but no, it's a real cracker of a torch and so bright.

As for my Maglite conversion, yes it was pricey but as you say, there is a sentimental connection.

Jay.
