I bought a Dr Grabow military push bit as a gift for an EMT friend of mine - it's "different" for sure, but what is the benefit of it? Before I bought it, I read somewhere that it was created for military personnel to take apart at a moments notice but what's up with the funky ridges at the end of the stem?
thanks!

The ridges at the end where it is inserted into the pipe are for decoration as well as grip. The advantage to the military bit is since it is tapered, it can be removed while still warm, for cleaning and packing (if under a surprise attack!) I am a fan of the Peterson Systems pipes, and they all have this stem. Just be aware to not tighten the stem too much as it is a wedge, and could split the shank over time. That is why most military bit pipes are banded. Insert the bit, give a GENTLE 1/8 turn, and you're there.

I would be interested to know where to buy the military push bits. Not the whole pipe, just the mouthpiece n military bit. Cannot seem to find (just those pieces) online. Any thoughts please?

Hey joda,
They are typically custom made to fit the pipe it was meant for. You can check ebay, from time to time people will just post stems. Some of the sponsors also sell the Peterson stems. I have seen them at smokingpipes.com and 4Noggins.
