Also called an army mount a military mount consists of a tapered stem and a metal casings around the shank where the stem goes in. Idea behind it that you can take the pipe apart even when it's hot. Your typical stem might get broken if you try to pull it off while it's hot. Army mount with its tapered form means that it won't have any structurally weak part and will fit right in with the metal bit on the shank.

If the stem also has a metal bit it's called a spigot.

I only have one, but I love this Ferndown. I was a little worried when I bought this estate, but hadn't yet smoked it (Christmas gift, wasn't opened until Christmas Day). Why did the owner sell it, was the mount a problem? On opening the box, the stem fitment was a little loose. But, after one smoke, it is as snug as my vulcanite stemmed pipes and a great smoker.
From what I've learned, this stem was developed for use by military pipe smokers who could quickly disassemble the pipe during battle.

I always liked the story behind the origin of the army mount. Military men would be in the foxhole smoking their pipe when they had a break in the action of battle, but when they were called into duty, they could pop the pipe apart while it was still warm and throw it in their pocket or their bag to be smoked later. The idea is very functional and very cool not to mention that a lot of them look really great. I have a few of them myself and would really love to own another one someday.
