I am currently in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. I got here yersterday afternoon and will be delivering a large hoist to a paper mill here this morning before moving on to Texas.
After checking into the hotel I decided to take a walk. I asked the desk clerk, a fellow from India with a British accent, about any places of interest in the area. He told me about a couple of restaurants and such around but cautioned me that this wasn't a "good area" and I shouldn't go walking around alone.
I just laughed and said "I'm a truck driver, I am always in bad neighborhoods".
I walked a few blocks, stopped at a BBQ place for a sandwich, and then a few blocks down found a little dive bar and stopped in there.
I was happy to see ashtrays on the bar. I packed a Peterson with Bishop's Move and lit up after ordering a beer.
A little while later I spotted a couple of fellows sitting at a table and one of them was smoking a pipe. I couldn't resist and walked over to chat with him. He was smoking Half and Half in a Dr Grabow Lark, and told me Dr Grabows are the only pipes he smokes.
We chatted for a few minutes about pipes, the weather, and such before I apologized for interrupting their conversation and returned to my seat at the bar. He was definitely a "codger" style pipe smoker and not a pipe hobbyist at all. Kind of fun to run across those fellow from time to time just to remind me that for many pipe smoking is just smoking.
