Following the white rabbit
I am currently in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. I got here yersterday afternoon and will be delivering a large hoist to a paper mill here this morning before moving on to Texas.
After checking into the hotel I decided to take a walk. I asked the desk clerk, a fellow from India with a British accent, about any places of interest in the area. He told me about a couple of restaurants and such around but cautioned me that this wasn't a "good area" and I shouldn't go walking around alone.
I just laughed and said "I'm a truck driver, I am always in bad neighborhoods".
I walked a few blocks, stopped at a BBQ place for a sandwich, and then a few blocks down found a little dive bar and stopped in there.
I was happy to see ashtrays on the bar. I packed a Peterson with Bishop's Move and lit up after ordering a beer.
A little while later I spotted a couple of fellows sitting at a table and one of them was smoking a pipe. I couldn't resist and walked over to chat with him. He was smoking Half and Half in a Dr Grabow Lark, and told me Dr Grabows are the only pipes he smokes.
We chatted for a few minutes about pipes, the weather, and such before I apologized for interrupting their conversation and returned to my seat at the bar. He was definitely a "codger" style pipe smoker and not a pipe hobbyist at all. Kind of fun to run across those fellow from time to time just to remind me that for many pipe smoking is just smoking.

always good to see someone else smoking a pipe in public, alas it is all too rare these days (and as you say, many are old-codger types)...but like you, if I see someone with a pipe it is a good ice breaker and I will try to initiate conversation with them; it's always interesting to know what other folks smoke and you never know you may discover a new tobacco or pipe you had never considered before

since I'm an old codger, I guess it's time to buy a Dr.Grabow

Don't forget the Codger blend.
Mason, It's nice to meet those Codgers.

Kind of nostalgic.

Reaching back to a time when smokin' a pipe was just smokin' a pipe.
I see you survived your "feathers" load.

Mason, finally headed to my neck of the woods! If you're going to be in Dallas for long, feel free to PM me. My taxi services are real cheap :)

I love talking to "codgers" and aspire to that myself...
I was on the NY Thruway yesterday and leaving the travel plaza I was working, spied another Codger smoking a very beat up Grabow. I stopped to chat and he was a nice guy, from CA on a trip to NYC. The pipe had been throughly smoked, all burnt and mishapen. He smokes Grabows till they crack, than tosses them in a box. He said he has over 200 pipes he's smoked over the years. He was a retired Grocery store buy, 72 yrs old on a bus trip. He said he smoked a pipe in his office. The blend he was smoking (Middleton 79) was the one blend all his secretaries said smelled nice. So, he kept smoking it for 50 years! He said he has a hard time buying it, but now found a place that still takes a check in the mail. I warned him to be careful smoking in NYC as you can now get a fine. He wasn't too happy about that.
He carried on this conversation with the pipe just perched on his mouth and was completely understandable. I still need to work on that for true "codger status"...

I've met a good many old time pipe smokers who have seldom if ever have been a smoke shop. For most of them Grabow is their pipe of choice. They're made here in western Carolina, and they're pretty easy to find in these parts.
