Great title.
I also wanted to send happy smoke rings to all.
May your TAD and PAD be quelled for a day, may your pipe smoke flawlessly, and I hope you get to spend quality time with friends and family.

WTF is a Kwanzaa?!

Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration held in the United States and also celebrated in the Western African Diaspora in other nations of the Americas. The celebration honors African heritage in African-American culture, and is observed from December 26 to January 1, culminating in a feast and gift-giving.

My wife and I were speculating on the Christmas tree and thinking it emerged in some form before

it was associated with Christmas, possibly in the areas now known as Germany, when religions

were nature centered, in the days of the Huns and other tribes. In China it is customary to bang kitchen

pans this time of year to wake up the sun, which has gotten sleepy and only shines a short time during the

day. Christmas borrowed a lot of its traditions from Roman Saturnalia observances which were likewise

based on the darkest time of the year. None of this diminishes devote observances at all, and to my mind

only deepens them. So happy holidays and increasing enlightenment to all. I think daylight became a little

longer Monday, by a minute or two.

The decorated tree as we know it now originated in Victorian England - but it was inspired by earlier traditions that can definitely be traced back earlier, such as the Yule Log (which is well-documented in pre-Christian sources). As far as I've been able to tell in my own research, there may have been a tradition of decorating trees outside the house, but cutting one down and bringing it indoors to decorate appears to be a later practice. Oh - and those 12 Days of Christmas? Count the days from the 21st (Solstice) to the 1st (New Year's Day)... :D
And whatever you're celebrating, have a good one (or nine, ten, or twelve)!
