Thinking about getting a meerschaum pipe. I want a classic shape not a carving or decoration. I understand so far that block Turkish is what is mostly available now and not to get anything pressed. I've found different sellers but don't know if one is better than the other. Altinok pipes has a huge selection of pipes and look like they are of good quality. Anyone have a preferred seller or maker? Appreciate the help.

I'll let a couple of the meer experts get into more specifically. The bulk of the pipes on the market, especially unsmoked, are Turkish meers. Their blocks have 6 different quality levels, largely centered on purity, color & porousness. The problem is that no one sells the pipes and tells you specifically with carver used which grade on which pipe. Certain carvers like Baki have a reputation for using the best stuff, so I assume it's Grade 5 or 6 but I don't know. I'm sure price is probably the best indication of quality but obviously, it's not perfect.
African production has closed down in recent years but there are numerous ones still out there in the estate market. Generally, they are more durable but less porous than Turkish meers. I think I've heard that the best African meers are close to Grade 3 or 4 Turkish meer.
As a specific to Roth's meers. The old Peterson meers which came from the Isle of Man were African meers and when production shut down, the newer stuff is now Turkish meers. The prices of the African Peterson is pretty reasonable and comparable to estate system pipes. The new Peterson Meers are about $300 USD and about the price of a Baki.

@ jgriff
in my previous messages, I had mentioned that from beginning of 2013 we have started to write "grade of block" and "grade of workmanship" and " carver name" on the products label. Also we give lifetime warranty to meerschaum block.

These are all new for the meerschaum business.
Grade system was introduced by us.
I dont want to explain who is using the low grade block meerschaum here but i can tell who use the grade 5-6 block :)
-MeerQueen brand (meerschaumstore.com)

-Artisan Baki

-Artisan Imdat and Medet (also known as Emin brothers)

-Artisan S.Yanik

I always preferred the Petersons myself. Better plumbing, high grade meerschaum. But I like what meerqueen has to say about rating the blocks and identifying the carver. I have not actually smoked or even seen one of her pipes though.

+1 for a Peterson Meer.
They are known for being offering reliable, well constructed, high-quality meer (but they are pricey unless you can snag one on ebay).
I just spied this one on smokingpipes:

Very elegant to my eyes, and no carvings from what I can see (I am also not a fan of heavily carved pipes). Not sure of the company's reputation, but smokingpipes stands behind their merchandise. And if you have any concerns, just contact them.

@rothnh thank you.
@foggy : i prefer to be said "his pipes" instead of "her pipes" in your statement :))
I know sometimes because of my nickname this is happening. But "MeerQueen" is our new brand. I also changed my avatar and put our family photo. :)
