So on my little meer I have a screw in tenon and it keeps loosening on the meer side itself. Not the mouth piece. I'm concerned that with time this will degrade the threads in the actual pipe due to its soft nature . How would I go about fixing it in place with a suitable glue etc .IE what's the best and safest(non toxic glue?) method to fix it back into place

I'm sure you'll get a few good suggestions. I've used a drop of super glue to secure loose bands to pipes but not sure what could be used in your situation. Have you checked out rebornpipes to see if he's every done a repair like you mention?

They sell replacement tenons and not all are the same size. You may should look into getting an assortment and seeing if you can find one that fits tighter.

Is it loosening after you remove the stem and if so, are you making sure to only turn the stem clockwise when you remove it? Those screw in mortises will untwist if you pull the stem out with much counterclockwise rotation.

If you try the super glue route, I'd just do a dab on the threads to build them up a bit rather than actually gluing it into the pipe. You'll probably want to be able to replace that insert at some point.

Both the stem and tenon are counter clockwise. I did not know there was another type. I'll look at the drop of superglue option and a replacement stem and tenon . Thanks everyone

Yes, only remove and insert the stem by turning it clockwise. Don't use glue on the threads as those inserts are prone to breaking and if glued you could damage the meerschaum trying to remove them.

Where did you find different sizes? They're universal fit.
There are two sizes used these days by most meer carvers, however the smaller one is uncommon and hard to get replacements for. The larger of the two is the most common, and are the ones you get by the bag from Meer Market.

If you're unscrewing them to remove the stem you doing it wrong, the tenon is actually two pieces that press fit like a briar pipe tenon. The insert in the pipe has a smooth ID and the part threaded in the stem (tenon) has a smooth male tenon that press into the insert in the meerschaum. If you screw them together and keep turning the stem CW it will start to slip and pull out of the insert in the pipe. Modern meers should be assembled and disassembled by turning CW always. This however does not apply to older meers with bone tenons, different animal altogether. They can be fixed on one side or threaded on both sides.
