McClelland Tin Weight Question

Howdy fellows,

I have a 2oz can of McClelland, which is from 2007. It is same the type of can still used by Cornell and Diehl, Gl Pease and probably others.

Indicated by the sound when shaken, I suspect that it may have dried out. In case it is still in good condition, I'd rather like to avoid opening it now, so my idea was to weigh it. The total weight of the can is 71g.

So could someone maybe tell me how much weight a closed tin of this type should have, please? It does not have one of these plastic lids, so I'd need the weight without the plastic lid.

McClelland changed from ounces to grams back in the early 1990s so, your tin is 50 grams. You don't say what blend you have but, many are broken flakes and the contents does "rattle" when shaken. I don't think you have anything to be concerned about.

Mike is absolutely correct about the sound being different between flakes and ribbons. I've been keeping a weight chart for many years for specific blends, including a ton of different McClelland's. So, if you tell me the name of the blend I will be happy to help if I can. And for clarification, if you have a tin of McClelland's that you describe as being 2 ounces, please check again. A tin from the year 2007 of that size should read as a 50g tin.

The helpful experts have already chimed in, but I’ll just add that McClelland in my memory always had a bit of a shake sound, and the smell is usually pungent enough that if there were any small leaks, you’d probably be able to get a whiff of the contents. I think the guys above will get your issue resolved and bring some peace to your mind.

Thanks for your good words, Steve. I get no smell from the tin... So my mind is already quite in peace with this.

I threw a few tins on the scale today. Weights are in grams with the plastic lids removed. All tins are from 2016, appear to be sealed, and really rattle when shaken.

Figures that I don't have a weight on Dulcet, but a 50g tin of Blackwoods Flake should weigh about the same and I've weighed plenty of those. The weight of your Dulcet tin is well within the safe range.

Ah, so one of the answers is: The tin weighs close to 20 grams.

Take the tin outside and set it on it's side edge, back facing you up against a brick wall and put a red dot in the middle of the bottom of the tin. Now take a pellet gun and shoot 5 Diablo or Barracuda hollow point style pellets at the dot. Now measure across the group of holes, that's your group size. Take the 5 pellets out and weight them and divide by 5, that's your standard pellet weight.
