A fine English blend is the result of top grade Virginias, quality Orientals, and masterful blending. Mike and Mary were at the top of the game. McClelland sourced some of the finest Virginias, and Mary personally went to Greece and Turkey to source the best of the Orientals available. They also had quite a bit of the last of the Syrian, which they used generously in their blends. And, Mike's and Mary's blending skills are legendary.
My absolute favorite tobacco on the planet is their Samovar, followed closely by Wilderness, Blue Mountain (Balkan Blue), FMATP, FMOTT, Yenidje Highlander, Legends, Three Oaks Syrian and Klenderwood. I think all their English/Balkans are superb, but the above stand out, for me.

I would say their English blends are better then their Virginias, but I am quite partial to all the Frogs in that pond. I miss Frog on a Log.
