Ive noticed that alot of guys have many many bulk and open tins they continue to dip in. Its been my experience that jared or not if i keep dipping into a blend it quickly drys out and or starts drastically losing flavor.Maybe its that i smoke alot of flake and Virginia blends?

Are you using Mason jars? Make sure the jar is airtight. If you reuse Mason jars, a bit of tobacco may get on the seal which can impact the tightness. I have many jars open and they stay at same moisture. You can buy replacement lids which are useful.

Do you smoke aromatics? I've read that they lose their flavorings as they dry. Definitely use canning jars if you don't already, they're the best!

I use bail top jars from Asda (UK version of Walmart) for storing my bulk blends and find that over a couple of months the tobacco starting to dry out some. I try to alleviate this by dropping in a piece of water soaked terracotta but if the seals were perfect in the first place this wouldn't be necessary.

Jay.

I think opening jars stops the aging process to some degree. The repeated exposure to air does dry out the tobacco somewhat. But you have to have access to your rotation and probably a few other "change of pace blends." I get so wrapped up in not drying out tobacco that I sometimes don't open tins for years. It's a balance. Keeping your leaf in jars that seal well is a good way to give it every chance of staying smokeable. You do have to open it to smoke it, to state the obvious. And most of us don't want to smoke only one blend until it's gone. Tobacco keeps somewhat better than you would think reading Forums. It's fairly forgiving.

You are quite correct in that regard but with all due respect MSO489, not everyone who uses jars for tobacco storage do so for ageing purposes. I certainly don't for the reason given above.
I jar my blends for convenience and I mainly use tins for my everyday supply, topping up those tins from my jars as and when required.
I just wish I could get hold of jars that have a 100% good seal

Jay.

The OP is talking about` tobacco drying out because he keeps opening it up to take some out to smoke. If I am not mistaken, this is not tobacco that is being put away to age or for long term storage. my bet is that the OP live in a dry climate which injects dry air every time they open the jar to get out a pipes worth of tobacco.

For the blends I'm not going to smoke within about a week, I jar in half pint jars. For bulks, or larger than 2 oz tins, I put in larger jars with about 1 oz. or so in a small 4oz jelly jar. This small jar is my "smoking" jar I dip into. When jar is empty I refill from the larger one. This way I am not constantly opening my large amount jar and drying out that stash

Then the solution is simple. Do as I do and add a moistened piece of terracotta to the jar. These can be purchased but I prefer to use a (free) piece of broken plant pot. I pop several lumps into a coffee mug and pour on boiling water...one can see it is absorbing the water as air bubbles float up from the chunks.
Once cooled simply add to your jar. I prefer to 'bury' mine deep into the baccy for better effect.

Jay.
