Ah, dress pipes! The ones I've seen are usually black and highly polished. If formal were were required the locale would probably be where smoking was prohibited. A Dunhill would certainly be acceptable, in black, with tie and tails or even a simple tuxedo. Maybe a new, pristine meerschaum for the little woman in her gown.

I would like to say, something like a black straight billiard would be best for a formal wear type event. But knowing me, I'd probably just grab whichever pipe I felt like smoking. If I choose to smoke a cob with my tux... so be it :)

Although I've never been in the situation, I could see myself choosing the pipe that I take out on a specific fancy evening.

The restrictions on smoking in public places are so prevalent, I don't worry much about taking a pipe or how it looks with my clothing or the shape of my face, etc. Back when smoking was omnipresent, pipe smokers did well to consider how their pipes went with clothing and other accessories. I do enjoy getting dressed up sometimes, but the opportunities have diminished. People wear sports clothes to church, and fine dining often doesn't require a jacket and tie. In fact, when I do go the suit and tie route, I often feel overdressed, in that I'm the most dressed up guy at the event. So then I end up peeling off the jacket and tie and rolling up my sleeves to fit in and make others comfortable. I do have one "full-dress" bent brandy Peterson, but I smoke it at home wearing jeans.

If I were dressed up for the evening, I would just pick a nice looking, clean, briar. I would likely take a Kaywoodie. I'd leave my cobs at home...But that's just me.

For formal evening wear, a small to medium black billiard. For collegiate wear (assuming tweed jacket with leather elbow patches), any large brown briar. For hoedowns and such, no black billiards, but a blast brown billiard or cob would suit.

My wife doesn't care what I wear when I smoke at home. Otherwise the pipe club and pipe show are as informal or formal as a person wants. I choose the pipe / tobacco. Then I look for clothes that are clean.

In fact I have a highly glossed ebony Chacom Samba 44 Bent Dublin with Jade accents on the rim and shiny acrylic stem. This pipe was definitely made for black tie affairs. Interestingly, I'm not that big on weddings and such so I just smoke it as if it were any other pipe. I did however dedicate it to aromatics, just in case!
