This last summer I inherited 40+ quality pipes from a dear uncle. I've been suffering from a serious TAD ever since! I'm trying to organize my pipes into a sensible smoking rotation, and I'm a little frustrated with wider bowls. It is harder to keep them lit, and I imagine most people will not want to smoke tobaccos with high Nic in them (as they hold a good amount of tobacco). Is there a particular cut or blends for which wide bowls are well-suited?
I also have some pipes with narrow but deep bowls. These have been hit or miss. Smoked PUF in one the other night and had a great experience. But that was after rubbing it out. The folding technique did not work well for this sort of bowl. Perhaps "stiffer" and heavier flakes work better in small bowls?
Would appreciate your thoughts on this subject.

I've only had one flake blend so far, Peterson's University Flake, and it smoked well with the fold and stuff method in my Aran 268, Zulu, which is a smaller conical shape. For wider bowls I'd think you'd probably want to stay away from aros or VA blends, because they tend to smoke hotter. Probably be better for Latakia/English/Balkan and maybe Perique/Oriental blends that don't have Virginia in it.

I don't think that the size of the bowl makes a difference, I have many pipes of all sizes and they all smoke fine with whatever tobacco I smoke, try loading your pipes a bit looser or try drying your tobacco out a bit, I'm sure with tial and error you will find a way to keep tour pipes alight. :puffy:

Following what tobakenist says, individual habits and techniques make all the difference.
Wide shallow bowl for x tobacco

Narrow deep bowl for y tobacco

etc.
Piffle.
What I have seen truth in is that some types of blends and cut perform better in some of my pipes than in others.

The point here is how they smoke, for me.
Experiment with what works and does not work for you and your pipes.
Specifically for smoking a flake, fold and stuff.

After folding the flake give the resultant "wad" (for want of a better term) a good twist before you insert it into the bowl.

This wad of folded flake should slide easily into the bowl, just the least bit of resistance. If it drops into the bowl it will be too loose. If you need to screw it into the bowl it will be too tightly packed.

This wad should be of a size that once in the bowl there is ample room remaining to place a pinch of fully rubbed out tobacco on top for kindling.
This approach works well for me regardless the size and configuration of the bowl.
HTH!

You frequently see something like the following:

Larger bowls are best for latakia blends and aromatics - lets the flavors develop better. Smaller bowls for Virginias and burleys.

YMMV.

I have not really tried to match Bowls to a Baccy But I have noticed that Aro's at least for me smoke better in a big bowl I seem to get more flavor.

I've heard that narrow deep bowls are good for Virginias, as it reduces the amount of tobacco that's burning which reduces the heat. It makes sense in theory but I can't say that I've ever noticed any difference any particular size/shape bowl makes with any particular tobacco.
