John is just a wonderful human being. He is thoroughly entertaining and one of the only presenters I really follow anymore. I have traded tobaccos with him in the past and have also gifted him several tobaccos and he is a class act. I really cannot say enough nice things about him. Great guy and great person to watch!
I'm not trying to be mean but I never quite got the box opening thing. Always seemed a little creepy. I'm sure is a cool guy don't get me wrong.
Box openings are kind of a weird thing among the youtube pipe guys, but there are actually a couple of different reasons behind it. The first is that when tobaccos or pipes are traded amongst guys in the community, a box opening is one way of saying, "Hey, here is the stuff you sent me. It arrived in good shape and I'll drag everything out to show it off so you know that nothing got screwed up during the shipping process." The other purpose is to acknowledge the person and make the community aware of the person, a kind of way of saying "Hey, this guy is really cool because he sent me some stuff. You guys should check out his videos because he's a great guy," etc. It's kind of an unspoken agreement between parties when doing a trade or giving a gift, kind of like the way people used to send hand written thank you notes.
I kind of understood thats why people opened boxes on youtube but still seems strange to me lol. I did check out his videos though. Seems like a cool old cat.
As someone who sends out a lot of boxes I think the box opening is pretty cool, never seen a video like that before. I always wonder what peoples reactions are when they open a goody box. It is like Christmas morning at my house.
Maybe it is the way they are usually opened. Very slowly like they are dealing with a woman lol. Maybe I just haven't seen any good box openings. :D
