Took this out for a smoke for the first time today. I might be easily impressed as a newbie who's only been smoking for about a month, but this Mastro de Paja made for an easy and relaxing smoke while I watched the rain. It was on ebay and the size was right and I liked the looks so I went for it. There were no other bids so I picked it up for $45. I'm not sure what sort of price is normal for it, but after receiving it and polishing the gold disk and band, giving it an extra cleaning, and lighting it up today, it definitely already has value to me. I can't find any pictures of a Mastro de Paja similar to this one with a gold disk and notches in the stem, so I would appreciate any thoughts or information on the pipe. I honestly wasn't too thrilled about sandblasted designs till this arrived, now I'm having to rethink my perspectives.

Thanks for the comments. I only have a few pipes right now while I'm soaking in all the advice and learning what fits me. This pipe grabbed my attention and I'm glad I went for it. Rather than going for a collection, I've been looking for something a little different each time to see what works for me. I usually like things that show off the grain of the wood so I was surprised when this all black pipe called out to me. Now I'm researching to see what I can learn about Mastro de Paja pipes. Learning the story is part of the fun!

Congratulations on the nice score. I don't have any Mastro de Paja pipes, but I do have a Nat Sherman travel humidor made by Mastro de Paja that I bought in the early '90s that I still use to this day. It doesn't have the best seal, but it works well enough for travel.
I haven't even thought about a travel humidor! Of course travel right now is still so very limited, but it might be something to think about.

Mastro's are great pipes. 1B grade is in the lower tier. I have several, and I love 'em.

Not quite as sought after as some of the other Italian brands, so there are opportunities to find good bargains. You did well at $45. Resale runs normally in the $60-80 range.
Thanks, it is a positive introduction to Italian pipes. I'm definitely pleased with it.

Very nice pipe! I like Mastro de Paja pipes, and have had a few over the years. This is one I've had the longest and will probably keep it for a long time. One of my favorite smoking pipes and while not quite as fancy as some I've seen, I enjoy its simple style and the grain. I think ya done real good with yours!

That's a gorgeous pipe! I actually prefer less fancy, clean looks like that. I used to collect fountain pens and lucked up on a few that might be considered fancy, but it is the the clean, functional ones I actually write with and enjoy. There is beauty in function in my opinion.

A Mastro de Paja on the left next to a Peterson Sherlock Holmes Milverton costing twice as much. The Mastros are a very good value imho.View attachment 115823
Where I am in my pipe smoking learning curve, most Petersons have been out of my price league! I have an old Premier I brought back to life with the moisture well similar to what I've read about in some Petersons so that has peaked my curiosity. It even looks like a Peterson copy or at least heavily inspired by them. Those are both good looking pipes, considering the price differences, how would compare their smoking qualities? I've been very happy with my Mastro de Paja though admittedly my experience is limited right now.

Maestros are terrific pipes for the money. When I was in college, I worked at a tobacconist and used the employee discount to buy a few. I have two billiards and they're still going strong 25 or so years later. Good pickup.

The Mastro de Paja (9mm filtered) is an excellent smoker. Although the Peterson is a better pipe overall as I prefer non filtered (with the exception of Savinelli, lol) for the most part. No doubt the Peterson is made from better briar stock and is superbly crafted. But once you get to a certain price point, the difference in smoking quality becomes less discernible in my opinion. A $120 pipe will smoke noticeably better than say a $60 pipe in most instances. But the difference in the smoking quality of a $220 pipe and a $120 is less discernible in my opinion. Although you may have some pipe snobs who disagree with that assessment lol. Just my 2 cents.
