Bob I went back to visit your article on tobacco storage. I made a little discovery in my cupboard today. Please keep In mind I'm easily amused, and simple. Anyway my wife uses a brand of spaghetti sauce called classico, well low and behold it comes in a mason jar (ATLAS) nice looking jar.It even has ounce marking on the side from 4oz to 16oz amazing. I know you recommended not using pickle jars, I cleaned a few of these classico jars using your recommende cleaning methods, and detect no odors.I'm going to purchase a few rings and lids and start storing. I thought this might be usuful to share with everyone, even help save some money.

That's great to know Ed. I think the only thing that would hold the odor is the lid.

Two points to keep in mind: in general, several small jars are better than one large one;

and, wide mouth jars make life a whole lot better -- for both filling and emptying.
I've been known to violate these principles, using Smucker's™ preserves jars, which are odor free and seal nicely.

I'm such an advocate of jarring that I'll transfer tobacco to a jar immediately upon opening a new tin.
Anyway.... thanks for the heads-up on the Classico spaghetti sauce jars. BTW, How's the sauce?

I have found that some jars still retain a smell, pickles being an absolute classic. Invariably it is a non-glass lid or the rubber seal that retains the odour and not the glass itself. If I am in any doubt at all I put it in the dishwasher on the hottest, longest wash. Then once dry, reseal the lid and leave it for a week somewhere warm. When you open it again in a weeks time if there is still a smell repeat the process or throw away. Not worth transfering old smells to a perfectly decent tobacco for the sake of a little time.

Just my 2 cents but at like 70 cents a jar I would much rather buy mason jars to protect my smoke than play around spending time cleaning and collecting old jars

I would much rather save 70 cents and reuse a Mason jar . They are made of pyrex . In fact Iam drinking from a Classico Mason jar right now . No one ever gets mad when you break a Mason jar . As in canning you boil the lids and the jars even if they are new .I prefer the two piece lids . Bail top jars with a glass lids and rubber seal are the ticket for tobacco and can be found in junk shops and thrift stores . Canning your own food is a good way to save money as well .And it tastes better than store bought can goods and can be fun . Grandma would be proud . By the way 4oz to 8oz of bulk tobacco fits into a quart jar . As with food store in a cool dark place and you are good to go .

Being naturally thrifty (cheap ) I salvage any and all jars I can . I also can some things when I am up to messing with it.

It is called frugal . Cheap is when you park out side of a drive in movie and read lips or rinse out and reuse Qtips .

You mean Q tips are disposable? Next you will tell me it's ok to throw out coffee grounds before the completely turn white!

Thanks for all the replies. and feedback. I just think since you already paid for the mason jar why dispose of it, with a new bail and lid all should be fine. We'll see I'm gonna give it a shot.

That sounds like a good idea Scratch. There shouldn't be a problem with re-using the old Classico jars. They are actually perfect because they are mason jars and you can replace the lid and ring with new ones. Just make sure that the jar is cleaned really well.
The problem with pickle jars is that there are no replacement lids for them and as Excav8tor said; it seems to be the lid that holds the smell. I can never get rid of it no matter how many times I wash it, soak it, etc.

Plastic peanut butter jars work great for storage (best if washed first). I have one out in my work shop which is not heated or cooled when I'm not there. All summer it bakes in the heat and all winter it's in the dry, cold air. But, when I open the jar the tobacco is fresh and nice...
On another note... the more tobacco you keep in a jar the fresher it will keep. There's less air that way.
