Does anyone recognize this maker? I am not sure if it is upside down.

Jay, I think he’s one of the leading carvers in Germany, but there he’s known as Holzwurm

It could be the previous owner wood-burned his initials in his pipes. It's quite perplexing.

Done on the bowl? I'd say not noticeably artistic for an artisan pipe carver. You have to be Picasso to get away with a really sloppy signature, it seems to me. But if the pipe is great, I'd give him/her a pass. At first glance, I thought it was some kind of biological incursion, like the woodworm remark.

I have a couple of them. They are well crafted freehands which is why I had to find out. I thought maybe a small time pipe maker, or a no name that some guy put his initials on them. Some pipes that I have had over the years had some signatures that took me a while to figure out, and they ended up being good makers. We have a busy weekend, but I will get a picture up of one of them in the next two day.
