I tried. Lord knows I tried but the voices kept calling to me.
The Holiday weekend started so innocently. Family, food, and watching my wife lay out the strategic shopping frenzy that will start on the blackest of Fridays. Friday morning I check my email. Just the normal emails from the normal places. Except one.
Moonshine Pipe Co. Now that was different. However it is time to shop till I drop with my wife so I slide the cursor to the top right corner to close the browser. At that moment I feel a warm breath flow past my right ear. At the same instant I hear a inviting whisper, “My Precious”.
I quickly turn and no one is behind me. It's early morning. Only a few cups of coffee in me. Probably something I ate yesterday. I close the browser. Grab the credit card , which is also attached to my wife's hand. Head out to spend the day filling the pickup with gifts. However in the back of my mind, I keep thinking about that voice and what I thought it said, “My Precious”.
We get home. I am exhausted. My back is aching from the heavy shopping bags. My arm is tired from all the card swiping. It's time to relax with a drink and sit at the computer. I open my email and strangely there is only one message. I do not remember deleting the others during the early morning and I was expecting, at least, the normal 5 more messages during the day.
The Moonshine Pipe Co. message was the only email available. As I stated before, it was oddly different from other email links. I just cannot tell you why it was different. So, I move the cursor over the link to open the message and at that exact moment I clearly hear the whisper again, “My Precious”.
This time it frightens me. I jump up from the chair. My wife calls from the other room, “What are you doing?”
“Nothing dear” I reply in a alarmed voice.
In front of me, on my computer, was a bizarre email link that would whisper to me each time my curser activated the link. Now that I look back it was not so much frightening, it was more wickedly seductive. For some reason I felt myself wanting, almost needing, to click the link. A bit concerned about my feeling of desire I try to move the mouse away from the email link so as to close the window. I cannot move away. Something is controlling my hand and I must, click, the link. My Precious is calling. I feel my index finger being pushed down on the mouse and I hear the click.
I must have blacked out at that moment. The only thing I can remember is reading words like, Black Friday starts now, All black pipes at some stupidly cheap price, Free shipping. However I am still sitting at my computer. On my screen is an open email from The Moonshine Pipe Co. It is an order confirmation thanking me for my purchase. It also has this picture.
Oh my God, what have I done? How am I going to explain this to my loving and understanding wife? I immediately get up from the computer desk and go to bed. I toss and turn all night thinking about what has just happened. At the same time the voice keeps replaying in my head, ”My Precious”.
I wake the next morning, with very little sleep. The coffee is truly a must today. Once again I go to my computer and open the browser to my email. Once again the seductive link is calling me. I can barely recall clicking the link again but I know I did because in front of me now is a new email thanking me for my purchase and a new picture of a pipe.
Currently, I am in control again. How do I know this? Well first of all the voices have stopped calling. Second most of the pipes at the Moonshine Pipe Co. are sold out. However I fear one day soon a new sale will be sent to my email box and once again I will hear that voice calling me to “My Precious”
How do I stop the voices? How do you control this hunger? I will check back later to see if you have any suggestions. Right now I need to order some new tobaccos to fill those new pipes. Would be a crying shame to not put those pipes to good use now. :wink:
