I had a Carey Magic inch for about ten years. For those who may not know this pipe, it has a little air vent in the stem (or shank?)
that breathes in a little stream of air that supposedly mellows and cools the smoke. This was one of the patent devices that was
added to pipes years ago to give them special competitive appeal when pipe smoking was more widely practiced than today. Smoking
my Carey, I didn't think it added much to the smoking experience or flavor. It adds a little too much more air to the flow and dilutes
the flavor somewhat, not in an especially pleasing way, from my perspective. It is my understanding that there were a number of these
carburator arrangements on various patented pipes in the Twentieth Century, and you still find them in flea markets and on ebay.
Carey still does a steady business, and perhaps some find it to their liking, a sort of filtering system to dial back strong tobacco. I wouldn't
tell you not to buy a Carey, but it didn't impress me.
