Dame Maggie Smith very famous British actress has passed away at age 89. She won Best Actress academy awards
for "The Prime of Miss Jean Brody" and a Best Supporting Actress for "California Suite". She is most well known for playing Minerva McGonagall in the 8-movie series of "Harry Potter" and for her work on the specials of "Downton Abbey". She received numerous awards for stage work, movie appearances, and roles on TV. She is one of few actresses to win an Oscar (movies), a Tony (stage) and an Emmy (TV).

Dame Maggie Smith was a colossus. I can't recall a single performance of hers that wasn't pure magic.

Indeed. Her character on Downton Abbey was the gravitational center around which the entire series orbited.

Wit and cleverness were her tools; never pushy, loud, or obnoxious. To make THAT believable took some serious acting chops.
