Thanks for the suggestion. Are you familiar with Robert Ruark, The Old Man and the Boy? I've enjoyed everything I've read of his. He's got a good one on his African safari also.

Gordon MacQuarrie is one of my favorite authors. Originally a journalist who eventually became the Managing Editor for the Superior (Wisconsin) Evening Telegram, he moved to Milwaukee in 1936 to become the nation's first outdoor editor at the Milwaukee Journal. Unfortunately, he died, too young, in 1956 at only 56-years-old.

Zack Taylor, an Editor at Sports Afield, put together three collections of MacQuarrie;s Old Duck Hunters' Association, Inc. (the "Inc." standing for incorrigible) stories: Stories of the Old Duck Hunters, More Stories of the Old Duck Hunters, and Last Stories of the Old Duck Hunters, all published by Willow Creek Press. Additional stories have been published as they have been found by fans combing old hunting and fishing magazines.

I have found that Mac Quarrie's stories always delight, and, what's more, they are just as much fun to re-read as they are to read the first time. Enjoy!

I can also recommend The Gordon MacQuarrie Sporting Treasury and the MacQuarrie Miscellany, both also edited by Mr. Taylor.

Additionally, Keith Crowley wrote an excellent biography of Mr. MacQuarrie titled Gordon MacQuarrie - The Story of an Old Duck Hunter.

Finally, the Barnes Area Historical Association in Hayward, Wisconsin has a permanent exhibit of MacQuarrie memorabilia. Here is a link (MacQuarrie Exhibit) to their Website.

There's a lot to like about that man and his legacy. Incidentally, Mr. MacQuarrie was a pipe-smoker!

I picked up a near mint hardback of MacQuarry Miscellany for $2 at a thrift store about 6 months back, not being at all familiar with the author. I started reading it and quickly moved to my porch and lit a pipe, also not knowing he himself smoked one. A great read only to be made into a experience of near perfection when accompanied by some tobacco.

If you like good reads about the outdoors, may I suggest "THE HELLDIVERS' RODEO: A Deadly, Extreme, Scuba-Diving, Spearfishing Adventure Amid the Offshore Oil Platforms in the Murky Waters of the Gulf of Mexico" and "THE HELLPIG HUNT: A Hunting Adventure in the Wild Wetlands at the Mouth of the Mississippi River by Middle-Aged Lunatics Who Refuse to Grow Up", both by Humberto Fontova.

On another note, your avatar suggests that you are a Shellback. I'm sure there are others in the forum who have also achieved that distinction. I'm personally a Golden Shellback, Blue-Nose and have been to the Domain of the Emperor Penguin.

One of my favorites, the boy experienced a childhood that is a lost way of life for most.
