So I tried MacBaren Old Dark Fired for the first time today. Pretty good, but it had that tomato-ish smell and taste I've read about. So do all the MacBaren blends have that going on?

That'd be the vinegar/ketchup smell, which would be things added to raise the moisture level and keep the tobacco from drying out from packaging to sale. Typically, McClellands blends will have that tin note, but MacBaren's hasn't had it for me at all.

I have not smoked Dark Fired, so I can't speak to it. I have never heard of anything like that in any MacBaren - and I have smoked a lot of them.
McClelland's Virginia blends give off a smell of aging tobacco when you pop the tin, because they are not vacuum sealed. Some people say this reminds them of tomato catsup. I have even seen some people claim these blends are topped to make them taste that way.

I have recently tried Mac Baren Regular (white), Royal (blue) and Vanilla cream flake and they all smoke and taste great. I did have to smoke Regular and Royal more gently but i got more flavor in the process. They taste like it says on the tin. No tomato smell etc :)

Do you mean MacBaren Seven Seas Regular and Royal? Because there's no blend called "MacBaren Regular" or "MacBaren Royal".

yes 7 seas regular and 7 seas royal. I didn't think leaving out the 7 seas would cause confusion :D

I smoke the HH Mature VA pretty regular. I think it's my favorite "straight" VA. You know I never noticed anythin glike Ketchup from the McClellands tins until I bought the Black Shag, which is a stoved VA. Russ O mentioned a while back that that smell was the aging of VA and was a good thing. I'm inclined to agree as I love the Black Shag.

MB ODF is an outstanding blend, blasted through a 4oz tin

in record time. Only aroma I got upon pop'in the tin was

deep earthy/smoked meat goodness...best rubbed out...seems

to be going out-of-stock fast :-(

I just popped open a tin of SG St. James Flake and it too smelled tomato-like. I think it's not just a brand-specific phenomenon.

Those two quotes sum up the whole thing.

Smoke it slowly. It's honey on toast. I'll smoke about 1 tin a year.

I follow pretty closely what some of the more seasoned vets on this forum smoke : Curse you, baron samedi! Just ordered a bunch of MacB's VA's from 4noggins! Just kidding, Baron (and others), you guys have good taste in tobaccos.

I am going through a tin of the Mixture Scottish Blend at the moment, only bought it because it was so cheap for a 100g tin. Not bad, but I agree there is not very much flavour. But it is a great smoke with coffee in the morning. It never seems to go out either, burns very well.

Butera's Royal Vintage Dark Stoved Is the strongest Ketchup smell of anything I have smoked. I have revisited it many times and it gets better every time. The ketchup smell transfers over well into taste IMO!!!

ODF almost seems like a Gawith Hoggarth style blend to me. Maybe there is Malawi or Kentucky dark fired leaf in it, or would that earthy tone, uncharacteristic of the rest of the MacBaren line, just be from the processing?
