Finally tried the MacBaren HH Acadian.
Described as: "This blend includes Virginia, Burley, original Cavendish, dark fired Kentucky, Oriental and of course a fair amount of Perique. The HH Acadian Perique has no top flavor at all which means that you will only enjoy the tobacco taste. When smoked you will experience no tongue bite and this blend will smoke to the bottom, leaving only dry ashes. It is a rich, flavorful and very satisfying smoke."
This was an enjoyable smoke for me. At first I thought I wasn't getting any nic hit at all, but it sort of sneaked up on me. Very subtle. But still not a huge nic hit, thankfully.
I liked that it had no toppings. It really allowed the tobaccos to come through, each small player adding to the entire chorus for a very enjoyable "concert."
The Perique in this blend doesn't do a smack down; in fact, for my tongue, it was very subtle and smooth. At first I was disappointed, because I loves me some Perique, but as I settled into the smoke, I realized that the mellow smoothness of the smoke was pretty genius in the blending.
I expected to like this one, since I love Perique and VaPers and Cavendish. What I didn't expect was how they blended all of these various tobacs together in such a way that they all play together as one harmonious, flowing musical event. No one tobac takes full and center stage; they all play together, reminding me more of Claude Debussy's Clair de Lune than, say, one of Beethoven's works that can be almost assaulting on the ears at times.
In fact, I imagine smoking this to Clair de Lune playing in the background while sipping a cuppa hot tea would be downright heavenly.
This is definitely a great tobac for a morning wake up or a good night smoke, or anytime in between.
Compared to, say, Luxury Bullseye Flake, which is a VaPer with Cavendish that I love, LBF is more straightforward and a bit punch-y, even bold, in your face with the Perique. MacBaren HH Acadian is much much more subtle-- lots of nuances in there, almost like hidden jewels, with an overall balanced smoke that is smooooooooooooooth and mellow, at least for me. The perique in here is definitely NOT overpowering like it can be in other perique blends. Depending on my mood, sometimes I love that Perique punch, and sometimes I want something more mellow but still with perique. MacBaren HH Acadian fits the bill for when I want it more mellow.
Nice addition to my stash! I can see it possibly replacing LBF at some point, even though I love LBF. Perhaps it's what I was in the mood for today, being another high humidity, rainy, grey, overcast day.
