All about the bite , so I'm wondering seen here and there that Mac Barren uses some chemicals that bite.
I have noticed that with dark twist and 3 nuns there is some bite but not with HH ODF and BDF I grabbed a tin of Rustica which I havent yet cracked.

I know these are in the burley family and it could be the Virginia thats biting me but I have smoke other Virginias that dont bite.
Would it be a bad assumption that maybe a straight VA thats HH wouldnt bite?, That I should stay away from Mac Barren standard mixtures and stick with HH?

I like you more than a friend, Cheers

MB produces 97.5% of all pipe tobaccos, ok that’s an exaggeration but not by much, i smoke most Va / Vapers of all kinds and haven’t had bite since i paid more attention to drying and even now I’m pretty aggressive on my cadence and don’t get bite. Possible user error? For the record i got some for, oh bite from everything lol. Also filter or filterless?

I am going through a jar of Virginia No 1, marvelous tobacco with no bite. HH Pure Virginia is one of my favorites. Dark Twist can bite a little if you start puffing too aggressively.
My fist bulk purchase 3lbs and branched out from there, 2 of them aging in Mylar and a big old jar to dip into, it’s such a nice even Virginia, nothing fancy but it doesn’t try to be.

HH Pure VA is fantastic. Fresh or aged, such a timeless blend.

Edit: I've never really experienced the Mac Bite that many talk about. I primarily smoke the HH line but smoke many others as well.

Filterless , just seems those two in particular dark twist and 3 nuns bite , I definitely watch my cadence try the breathe method and they seem dry enough , but I’ll experiment they are a similar cut which seem dry but might not be …

I’m sure there will be posts about your body PH level and things interacting, but i tend to go simpler cause i be simple 😂

I’ve moved to filtered pipes and if I’m in the mood i just go filterless or with the adapter for 6mm filters.

The HH line is supposed to be as minimally cased and not topped as possible compared to their other lines. I think it's a reasonable assumption that if their standard stuff does bite you, and a few of the HH blends do not, if it's the casing/topping that's causing your bite then the rest of the HH line is likely to play nice with you.

When I had my first toke of Va No. 1, it bit my tongue like someone was trying to saw it off with a blunt serrated blade. 10 years after I fished it out of the bin where I had toss the rest of the bag, it no longer bit. I think this is due more to the calluses that had developed on my tongue in the ensuing years rather than the aging of the leaf, as nothing much bites me these days.

@vosBghos, you might like St. Bruno Flake or RR, also made by Mac B.

I smoke alot of Mac Baren, without bite. My theory is that since MB are Danish blends, which are on the light side, and often uses lighter Virginias (VA#1, Vanilla Cream, etc.), that people who are used to more heavily flavored tobaccos tend to puff faster and hotter trying to get the level of flavor they're used to. It's like chugging a Hamm's expecting to get an IPA flavor, it won't work! Best to puff slow and appreciate the subtleties. Just my $0.05 (inflation...)

Yes both the 5 nuns and dark twist seem to have lighter VA , think the dark in the twist is Kentucky , thanks

When Va No. 1 bit me, it did so on first puff. So did Aylesbury Latakia Blend. That suggests my problem was chemical. Three Castles also bit me when smoked in a pipe but strangely enough not when rolled into a cigarette. Three Castles was my favorite RYO. No RYO ever bit me. I've no explanation for this.

Do you live near the 45th parallel? That would explain it...

PS Did you ever, in a moment of inexplicable madness, decline a FREE quarter pound of a beloved Lakeland flake from a fellow local pipe club member???

macbarren is the most bite adjacent brand I can think of. I think it's what they use to sweeten their blends. All of their main line blends are kind of a tad sweeter then tobacco naturally is. Frankly it's probably some form of sugar.

Mac Baren has a reputation for biting with some of the older blends. The company suggests packing more loosely if you have that issue.
The HH line is, as someone mentioned, not topped. Cased, yes, as are all tobaccos, but no other flavorings are added.puffy
