I recently received a sample of Mac Baren 7 Seas Gold from a fellow forum member in exchange for some Hobbits Weed.
This morning I stuffed it into my trusty "driving pipe" a Missouri Meer, and puffed thoughtfully to work.
It was ok, not too bad, but not amazing. I still like their Vanilla Cream better.
I had heard talk that 7 seas is MacB's answer to Captain Black White.
I've also heard that every pipe smoker needs to try Capt. Black at least once, so on lunch I swung by the closest smoke shop and procured myself a pouch.
At the end of the day I filled the cob with my impulse buy and drove home.
I was surprised to say the least, from what I had read in many reviews CBW was a vile, soupy, tongue blackening blend full of chemicals.
First off, that stuff lights and stays lit like nobody's business, and made thick white smoke, so ok...besides the propylene glycerol smoke additive, there's got to be some kind of major chemicals at work there!
However, it was actualy pleasant, very sweet, nice room note (or would that be car note?) and didn't bite or sludge up the bowl like I had heard.
All in all not really great, but not bad...not bad at all.
In my opinion, Captain Black White is to the pipe tobacco world what a big greasy burger is to the culinary world, vile in theory, made fun of in some circles, but sometimes it really hits the spot more than you want to admit.
