Losing sense of smell

I must be losing my sense of smell. People talk of room note but I don't smell anything when I smoke. Do you?

I rarely smell anything when I smoke. Its only after I come back into the room I left do I notice anything.
I think room note is more for bystanders than pipers.

I've never noticed room note while smoking. I'll sometimes catch a whiff when I walk into a room I recently smoked in.

I've had zero sense of smell for 50 years of anything. It's like being color blind, you associate certain shades to colors. However I do have a tendency to over spice,etc in my cooking as I can't smell it...

That said, though, I do sometimes get a faint wisp of the room note from the smoke coming off the pipe's bowl. I can also smell it on my clothes when riding the elevator.
Your nose is fine.

For me its only the mustache note as I exclusively smoke outside.

I think the room note refers to the olfactory experience of those in the room with the smoker but not the smoker him or herself. As with cooking, the "chef" is so immersed in the fragrance of the food that he or she misses some of the pleasure of the sense of smell. It's the people who come to the food fresh in the dining room rather than the kitchen who enjoy that. So bystanders are the judges of room note, I think.

I have a terrible sense of smell. Always have. It's a blessing and a curse.

The sense of smell is probably underrated. People associate it with bad odors, so it has a sort of low ranking among the senses. But some people are so attuned they can tell if someone else has been in their house even if the person isn't particularly scented or smelly. Some trackers and exterminators can smell game or varmints. Most botanists identify plants by smell, and so on. If you have a good sniffer, cultivate it.

Not being able to smell the room note is natural. Only people who are not smoking can detect it. There is nothing wrong with your sense of smell.
