Asbestos was quite common in pipe manufacturing in the teens and twenties. There were a lot of gourd calabashes the were filled with asbestos and then capped with silver.

As long as it isn't frangible, you'd likely be okay. But the reaming thing would be a challenge. And given the availability of countless excellent pipes made from alternative materials that are safe, no reason to smoke it.
