I am currently smoking two very good tobaccos:
McCelland's - Three Oaks Syrian

G.L. Pease' - Maltese Falcon
They are both English blends. The problem is that the girlfriend is "tolerating" the smell that is in my car (I only smoke in the car) and on my clothes. I used to smoke aromatics and she liked my "smell".
So there is the problem, I certainly do not want to return to aromatics. I do NOT like burly. I would enjoy smoking a good virginia if it was on the naturally "sweet" side. Made a very "light" casing. A good navy cut perhaps as long as it had no burly and didn't smoke too wet.
Anyone got an idea of a fairly pleasant smelling tobacco especially the lingering after smell?

I don't know how sensitive you are to burley, but Mac Baren Navy Flake supposedly has it, not that I can tell. Like Arthur recommended, the Plum Cake would probably be a good start, along with Dark Twist Roll Cake.
If you're wanting a dry smoke with a light casing and a great room note, Mac Baren has a lot to offer as far as blenders go. I don't think whatever burley is in any of their blends I've tried would be enough to offend your taste buds.

Try Stokkebye's Luxury Twist Flake. It is a non-aromatic supposedly pure Virginia blend but it smells and looks amazing, with a pleasant room note. I would swear there is some kind of topping ... The flakes, moreover, are little works of art.

I have picked up two tobaccos:
Mac Baren's Navy Flake and McClelland's Grand Orientals: Classic Samsun. I had hoped to pick up Mac Baren's HH Mature Virginia, but they had run out.
I will need to order McClelland's Bulk 5100. I have heard for many years of this tobacco and always ended up smoking the McClelland's 27 because it was available (but even then, it has been 10-years since I smoked a straight virginia). I have wondered about the "Hearth & Home Anniversary Kake" so it is good to have the review. The Plum Cake sort of scares me. Probably will try Stokkebye's Luxury Twist Flake also.
I have popped the tin of Navy Flake and gave it a try. I tried the folding of the flake in half and over on itself, stuffing it into the pipe with a twist (a method that is supposedly correct), but that went badly. Always thought it would be cool to load a pipe in such manner, but I do not have the art down. Instead I ended up rubbing it out. It smoked a bit "hot" which is pretty much normal for Mac Baren's tobaccos (though the judges are pretty split). I will have to smoke slower. So far I do like it, but there is a bit more nicotine then I am accustomed. There definately is burley. The truth is I REALLY want to like a navy flake for the most silly of reasons i.e. I was in the navy. Pathetic, eh? Sailors were really big into pipe smoking in the wooden ship days. I knew an old sailor who gave me a couple old Estellas in '93 prior passing away. He supposedly was a spy in WW2 as a civilian He would relay ship movements to the allies.
I have yet to try the tin of McClelland's Grand Orientals: Classic Samsun, but have little doubt I will enjoy it.
Thanks folks!

There definately is burley.
I hope you do get around to enjoying it more than you are now. I didn't think the burley would be enough to make itself known much; sorry if the recommendation turned out badly.
With that aside, how's the girlfriend like it?

Oh, I have enjoyed my first couple bowls of the navy flake, but haven't quite felt it out. It is actually a great recommendation since from what I have been reading, it is probably one of the very best navy flakes.
It is too early to tell with the girlfriend. We maintain seperate households (children, ex, etc...), but she stays with me over the weekend. She typically is not around me when I smoke. I do not smoke in the house or when she is in the car. So it comes down to how the smoke smells on my clothes and hair. We will see tomorrow!

I'm a simple guy when it comes to tobaccos.

I like latakia blends but the better half doesn't, so my time to enjoy them is limited.

The one tobacco that she approves of (in a shared environment) is 1Q.

I buy it in bulk usually a pound at a time.

A good honest smoke that doesn't break the bank and has a good room note.

My local shop " The Briary calls it Yorkshire.

It's Skip's most popular blend.

You might try Peterson's University Flake or Samuel Gawith's Full Virginia Flake. The UF is a little sweeter to my palate. The nicotine can be a little overwelming though if you aren't accustomed to strong tobaccos. Herself likes the room note of either of the black ropes from Gawith or Gawith & Hogarth. Should you decide to try one of those, be aware they are VERY strong in the nicotine department. Both are Virginia blends.
