Hey everyone I'm new here and soaking up all the great info from the journeyman pipers. My birhday is Friday and my wife is taking me to lunch and then the b& m in Baltimore. I have an old Nordind#4, a Jobey and a few Grabows. I have a 100.00

limit. Can I have some sugestions on my new pipe.

+1 for the Sav. I got my first about a month ago and it has become my favorite pipe. It also only cost me around $60 so that may be a big plus for you. However I also enjoy my meer because I doesn't need to rest; my go to pipe if you will. Especially when the Sav is resting. It's a very cool smoke and solid block pipes can be had for less than $100.

Can't go wrong with a Sav or a Stanwell, I have several of both

brands...great smokers every time
Also check into Boswell, you could probably snag one for

about $100.00 have several of those as well...outstanding

smokers

+1 for Boswell or Savinelli. However you are going to get alot of different answers here. And most likely all the pipes that are suggested will be great. We all just have our own favorites. But with Boswell are great.

Hey edj5 welcome to the forum! Thanks for joining us here.
We all just have our own favorites.
drwatson nailed it... We certainly do. I'm partial to a good Estate Pipe purchase. I'm not sure where you're headed in Baltimore for your birthday pipe buy, but most good B&Ms have a reasonable selection of estates that have been professionally cleaned and sanitized. You can often get a LOT more pipe for your money with an estate purchase.
If the idea of buying a previously smoked pipe doesn't appeal then Stanwells, Savinellis, and Boswells all have great reputations. A fair few of my Canadian pipe brethren swear by Brigham pipes. You can get into a very good quality sandblast for around $100.00. Brighams all have maple filters, so you'll want to weigh that into consideration.
Have fun with your decision making, buy what you like and what feels good and you'll not go wrong man.
Cheers,
-- Pat

Happy birthday, and welcome to the hobby and to the forums!

Savinelli and Stanwell are good choices. If your B&M doesn't have a pipe that pushes all the right buttons,

then get back to us in this thread and get some input about pipes available online. There are some good bargains out there.

All the suggestions above are good. To give just a little more breadth to your choice, I would certainly

look at pipes from Neerup, Luciano, Johs, and maybe Britannia, if they have those. I'd go in with some

ideas about what size and shape pipe, and what finishes you'd like. You might want to ask the sales

assistant for any advice on the best deal for your dollar, but don't get led to something just because it's

on sale or the sales person likes it. You just don't want to miss a jewel that happens to be 40% off.

Take a few fresh pipe cleaners along to check the drilling. Most bent pipes don't take a pipe cleaner to

the bowl, but most straight and slightly bent will. You may want to take more time than your wife will to

look at pipes and consider the alternatives. Depends if you like to leap or ponder. Happy birthday.

What a sweet thing for your wife to do. My wife's gift pipes are some of my favorites, and I always

think of her when I smoke them. I'm sure you'll get a great pipe. Let us know what you choose.

One other note... I don't know whether the laws in Maryland allow for you to smoke in your tobacconist, but if they do, pack up your grabows, nording and Jobey and bring them all with you on the off chance that they'll let you sample their blended/bulk tobaccos.

I would recommend that you go and just enjoy the moment. Take your time and check out all of the pipes. Wait and see which one "talks" to you. It may be a Sav., or a Pete., or you may find and old treasure in the estate pipes. Just take your time and soak it all in. Just remember, if you do it right, you will get a pipe that you will enjoys for years to come. Have Fun!!!

Hey everyone, hope all are having a great weekend. Had a great time on my birthday. Went to Cross Street Tobacco in federal Hill and after a lot of questions and many pipes to look at, I chose a Larocca Sienna bent pipe. After a great lunch at Rileighs Oyster Bar and a cold beverage or two, came home lit it up and was very happy with my purchase. I even had enough left to try a couple of their bulk blends and stayed within my original budget. Thank you all for the info and tips,it was most appreciated. Thanks again for your help. :D

edj5, I have a Larocca rusticated poker in burnt red. I saw it at my local independent shop, couldn't decide,

waited weeks, and went back to buy it if it was still there, and it was. It's been a great pipe. Happy smoking

your Larocca. You're not a year older, you're up by one pipe.

Did anybody mention Savinelli??? Oh, cool...I totally agree with them. Plenty of Savinellis for under $100. All my Savs smoke great.

Welcome to theforum and congrats on your purchase! For next time, id like to put in a plug for Lane era Charatans, if you are open to estate pipes. Patience and active shopping will land you one well under $100. They may have been inferior business men to Dunhill, but they were not inferior craftsmen.
