Hey guys, this might seem a bit silly, but I'm keeping a weather eye out for a new pipe, and I have interest in a particular shape/style, but can't seem to find it (outside of a screen-replica, but I don't want the exact one, if that makes sense?). I'm looking for a churchwarden bent stem pipe with a large square bowl, a la Thorin's pipe in The Hobbit films...but I don't want exactly his pipe, just something in that frame of reference. So forgive my silliness and ignorance, but can anyone point me in a direction?

First it was hobbit pipes, then wizard pipes. Now it's dwarf pipes.
This is not an "off the rack" shape. You may have to contact an artisan carver and commission it, though that will cost you. If you don't mind me asking, are you an experienced pipe smoker? I'm asking because churchwardens aren't the best pipes to learn on (in my opinion).

Pipe smoker for about a decade, with some gaps here and there....I have a Lorenzo Lectura and a 16" steel bowled churchwarden already, and a half dozen other pipes, I have some experience. I don't mind the question at all bigvan. The dwarf pipe thing is a convenient "Hey, that's kinda cool...wonder if I could get something like it" example...not so much a passing fancy. I kinda thought it would be a 'special/custom' kinda thing...might try to make one myself...kill two birds with one stone, as they say. Thanks for your help!

They look fine, but like I said in original post, I'm not looking for the identical pipe, just one in that shape, more or less. Thank you for the links, and that first one, I may send a message to and inquire about my ideas.

If you can find a regular (non-churchwarden pipe) with a square bowl something like you want, you might be

able to find a churchwarden stem for it, or have a pipe repairman make you one. Most of the panel pipes,

whether they are billiard or pot panels, have straight stems, so you might have to settle for a gently curved

stem, so the bowl would not be too canted forward, dumping out the ash to some degree. Commissioning

a pipe is an alternative, but would be somewhat expensive and might not be so easy for a less experienced

pipe smoker, in terms of communicating exactly what you want. I'd shop a lot of churchwardens and see if

there is one you find attractive, even if it isn't this exact configuration. Savenelli makes a rather nice

non-filtered fully arched churchwarden, the 601, that is an excellent pipe and not too pricey, for example.

Thanks mso. I have already started talks with a pipe maker on my ideas, and am still seriously considering attempting it myself. It wouldn't be the first DIY project I've ever done, I'm confident that I can at least make the bowl/stummel section, maybe get a ready made or custom stem. It wouldn't be my first churchwarden, and after smoking a variety of pipes, I've got a decent feel for what I'm looking for with this one...
That Savenelli you mention is a nice pipe, and I'm not ruling out the possibility of getting one of those...but right now, I have a certain aesthetic/motif in mind. Its easier for me to sketch out and conceptualize than to communicate, obviously, and there's a valid reason for it...I assure you its not due to a lack of familiarity with pipes, however.
Thanks again for the assistance, mso489, samcoffeeman, and bigvan; all much appreciated!

Just wanted to throw in an update. It's looking like I might just try to make this one myself. Thinking I may go for bog oak or olivewood. Just have to find a good sized block and getting to it.

It is an old thread, I know, but it bears an update and a big thank you to samcoffeeman. I contacted that artisan, his name is Arcangelo Ambrosi, and he worked with me on a custom longsmoker that I have named 'The Adjudicator'.

It's a smooth smoking behemoth, great for a 1 1/2 to 2 hour smoke on a single bowl, and it got its name from so many people telling me it looks like a gavel. It did not take long to make, relatively speaking, and I personally recommend Arcangelo for a custom pipe of sound style and craftsmanship for a very reasonable price.
