Long-term Tobacco Storage in Mason Jars

For those of you who have been at this for some time, what would you say is the longest time that you cellared a tobacco in a Mason jar that upon smoking it still retained its quality? I ask this because current Mason jar packaging claims the seal will remain good for 18 months.

The mason label is talking about how long it will hold a pressure seal. I assume you arent doing that. Mason jars will work for years for your purposes.

I've kept tobacco in Mason jars for a decade without issue.

I recently opened a jar of bulk MM965 that was 10 years old and it was perfectly fine.

I switched to mylar for weight issues. If you have more restraint then I do and keep your cellar at 10 pounds or so then it may not matter. Once you get into triple digit pounds, or near that the weight savings of mylar makes a huge difference...also, I have to move a lot for work and moving the cellar is no picnic.

As long as I have data- 7-8 years with Mason jars, no problem.

Here's another option for those who love pickled herring from Lasc Co: Also some 7-8 year tobacco stored in these containers.

The only trick is to very carefully remove the top in one piece, without tears- it acts as the seal to keep seepage from happening.

If you're talking about traditional mason jars with the inner ring make sure to use a good brand. Buy Ball or Kerr brand jars. I once made the mistake of buying an Amazon no-brand or off-brand and the seals did not work. They may have been made in China but irregardless buy the ones made by Ball or Kerr.

I had some FVF with 12 years in a mason jar, with no issues. I assume the 18-month claim applies to hot canning applications, even then I recall jars my mom canned lasting much longer than 18 months.

The legal group wont let them say more than 18 months!

I haven't agreed anything in Mason jars myself past 7 years. But I've smoked a number of jars 10 to 20 years old. I have yet to see any degradation.

13 years, but I decanted everything into heat sealed food grade Mylar for the move, so currently no mason jars.

I've had stuff in jars for 10+ years without a problem. Seem to me to be better than most tins.
