Little Fiddling Experiment

With the rest of my family out of town on vacation I was left with plenty of quiet and free time. I grabbed some kindling and started trying to come up with a pipe holder idea. This is just the first attempt but I think it looks pretty cool, even without any coloring or paint. Let me know what you think.

Its actually very secure. The trick was making the cut so the button slides in from the side of the opening (picture sliding a credit card in a machine) and cannot be pulled straight forward out of the mouth.
In my next attempt I am going to try to size it so I can fit a straight billiard on the top half with a bent on the bottom. The other idea I was thinking was putting a groove in the base of the stand as a small ash tray or spot to put a lighter and pipe tool.

That looks like a cool way to rack a pipe, but I'd worry a little about strain on the stem - unless the bowl of the pipe rests on a solid surface. But then it'd be hard to come up with a design that fits all sizes and shapes of pipes.

@4dot That is an interesting concern I have not previously concerned. This particular pipe is rather strong vulcanite stem and light briar but with some of my heavier pipes I may not want to test the stems. My other thought it this is similar to clenching.

My concern along with the others is the amount of room this device would occupy; it does look like this would stick out pretty far

I like it, I bet it will look very nice finished. I would also think making it hold 4 pipes all the way around would be nice too.
