Hi,

is there a list of all pipmakers and their special those additions to pipes like Peterson’s System?

I would like to see all those inventions and their pros and cons.

Thanks

Luke

System's probably the most famous gimmicky pipe invention by far. Other standouts would be Falcon pipes and it's derivatives like Radiator, various Calabash pipes and reverse Calabash, Nording's bag of proprietary rocks, stingers (but these are basically extinct), and Brigham's weird rock wood inserts.

I'd also include weird tangential accessories like arc lighters and all the Lampe Berger stuff.

Peterson System isn't a gimmick. It actually works for those who are willing to enjoy the P-lip. Metal pipes also work rather nicely, as long as you can dismiss their ugliness. Stinger, not a big success. Seems like Brigham insert does the job.

Savinelli manufacture something called the "Dry System".

"In 1981, after several years of research, Savinelli launched the “Dry System”, combining trap and filter. The name “Dry” comes from the introduction of the balsa “filter” into the traditional system pipe - the “System” being the presence of the built-in moisture trap in the shank. The balsa mops up the moisture in the smoke hence the term “Dry” system."

I didn't mean gimmick in a derogatory way. I own a few system pipes and like them quite a bit even if the P-lip part doesn't agree with me as much.

Here is one by Denicote, that I have come across in my years in service to the hobby. It's a double filter system, where a small vulcantite round section on one end sports a stinger that gets into the shank, and on the other end it fits a 9 mm filter, over which the stem is inserted. It works as it delivers a pretty cool smoke..

The balsa works! Especially for "wet" blends, like some aromatics. puffy
