For the most part, my pipes are dedicated to genres of tobaccos, Virginia/Vaper pipes, latakia pipes, aromatic pipes. But, I have a few pipes that I just couldn't decide, or because I don't smoke latakias or aromatics often, I wanted to switch them to be able to use the pipe more often, and I kept switching them.
Anyhow's, after a bit of trial and error, I have a system for switching the blends. The system allows me to enjoy the ghost of the previous blend with the new one.
On an aromatic pipe, I cannot just jump into a Virginia or VaPer next, because the aromatic residuals, generally overwhelm the more delicate flavors of the Virginias. However, I have found that the aromatic ghosts usually goes well with a latkia or Balkan blend. The heavier spicy tobaccos seem to walk shoulder to shoulder with the aromas of aromatic, for the most part. Of course, I would never smoke a cherry or strong fruity aromatic, so it's usually just the rum, caramel, or vanilla flavor mixing in with the orientals and latakia. That is, unless the aromatic is just way too powerful. I have one that will always taste like Molto Dolce no matter what is smoked in it. Even NightCap has that suntan lotion taste of MD.
On a latakia pipe, I can smoke a heavy sweet Virginia, like Red Cake or LTF. It is usually just a few smokes and the latakia dissipates, and then I can use the pipe for lighter Virginias. But, I find that RED Cake and LTF seem to really harmonize with the latakia ghost for me. So, It isn't a terrible experience, and sometimes it can be a very pleasant surprise.
And, once a pipes has been dedicated to a Virginia or Vaper, I could (if I wanted) switch to an aromatic or latakia without much disruption to the tobacco's flavor.
So that leaves me with an aromatic -> latakia -> Virginia/VaPer rotation.
Now, I don't mean to suggest that I lackadaisically switch between genres with just any pipe. These are my outlier pipes that I just can't decide what they should be. I may eventually drawer these pipes, but I keep smoking them in hopes that some blend just sings with them.
Anyways, have you guys noticed such things in your explorations of blends between pipes? Or, maybe you have a suggestion that I am missing in my observations. Smoky Monday to ya'll :puffy:

I use my Stanwell Golden Danish exclusively for C&D Gentleman Caller as that blend, for me anyway, is the king of ghosting. I have a BC Formula that I use for the other, very few, aromatics that I smoke. The rest of my pipes cover the rest of my blends which tend to be latakias.

I have yet to try deertongue, but I imagine it to be about as powerful as Molto Dolce on flavoring the pipe. I still have one estate pipe that had been used to smoke lakelands in, and I couldn't shake that ghost at all. I merely keep it in case one day I lose my mind and decide to try that genre again.

It's funny you say that cosmic. I bought an estate Edwards bulldog that has received no less than 6 Everclear and salt baths, the stem has had 3 oxi soaks and then the thorough cleaning a pipe should get every X amount of smokes. Well I think the previous owner smoked an amaretto tobacco wile eating amaretto cookies while drinking amaretto as I STILL smell the amaretto in the distance. I figured I would beat the ghost out with Balkans and English blends. While this has worked that amaretto still lingers a the end of the bowl. I am smoking this pipe with some Squadron Leader as I type this and it's it the worst thing imaginable. All new pipes are usually dedicated after break in but I have used your method with estates.

Yeh, the very bottom of the bowl seems to retain the ghost best. It figures that the hardest part of the chamber to break in, retains the ghost, as you can't even scrape it out easily or without having to break the damn thing like it was brand new again.
I sometimes get a faint hint of something in the bottom that I don't even remember smoking in that pipe.
