I find that it's best to do that with Va-based tobaccos; Burley's don't DGT as well for my tastes.

I will frequently establish a good charring light, then let the bowl sit overnight. I don't know how

often the same bowl can be subjected to long interval relights.
I would like to hear the opinions of aromatics smokers, as well as those with other tobacco genres.

Does setting down the pipe after being lit cause any changes to the taste, like will it become say sour or rancid?

Don't know why, but I have a hard time doing the DGT (delayed gratification technique) thing. Most of the time the bowl loses it's flavor and becomes "stale" tasting to me. I would rather fill with new tobacco and go from there, just my opinion. Different strokes for different folks. Take care.

I will frequently set a pipe down, only to revisit it later. They seem to taste a bit stronger after a "resting" for an hour or so. I seldom go longer than that. If I come back to a pipe that has been "resting" for an extended time (2 or more hours) I will empty and repack the bowl.

I suggest that if you know that you will not finish a full bowl, only pack a half bowl.
Waste not, Want not.

The first three or four puffs after a re-light are nasty, but after that it is usually fine.

I often don't finish the last pipe of the evening. The only tobaccos I find I don't like the next morning are ropes. They get very harsh.

Va's seem to get better with some time on them. For me, they get sweeter and nuttier. My English blends only dry out and burn like det. cord.

I always just thought that this was a part of Pipe smoking. To

my surprise I found it had a name... DGT.

I'm with Mason on that. Though it's a good idea to wait until after breakfast to fire up if it was a potent blend.

I do not have a problem with doing it . First few puffs can be bitter .But when each bowl is done the pipe should be cleaned with a pipe cleaner .

Ditto with the last three posts...I almost never finish a pipe in one sitting. Occasionally the first few puffs are a little bitter, but it seems to depend on the 'baccy. If it doesn't mellow out after a few puffs then I will dump it.
