Hello Brothers and Sisters of the Leaf!
I wanted to get the scoop on you, my customers.
What do you look for in a pipe? What is your 'favorite' pipe? What makes your 'favorite' pipe your favorite? How often do you smoke your 'favorite' pipe? What is in your pipe rotation? Have you had any bad experience with a particular pipe? Tell me all about your pipe smoking experiences!
And remember, you can never have too many pipes!

Hmm well I have about 25 (plus or minus) pipes that I pretty much just pick and choose which to smoke from.

My favourite is probably my Georg Jensen for it's style and wide open draw for some good smoking.

Next to that one it's all of my Brigham's because they all smoke so well, look so good, and are from a Canadian company and I love all of those things.

I smoke my favourites pretty regularly and because of the number I have I have the advantage of not needing a real rotation.
Most of my pipes have a sandblast or rustication because I really love the look on those. I also hope to get a nice draw

Hah a bad experience with a pipe has actually been with my most recent acquisition, an estate Jeantet oom paul. My first few smokes I found that when I reached the bottom I'd get a weird taste and after I dropped the stuff out I found that it was oily at the bottom. Well that's gone away now and it's a great smoker.

Without a doubt those that smoke cool with very little bowl heat find their way into my favorites section..... I have a few pipes that were expensive... look good.... but just get hotter than Hades..no matter how slow you smoke them or what tobacco you have in them.... I like a pipe I can hold and not feel the extreme heat......

Right now, I'm on a meerschaum kick. IMP or other quality pipes in the $100-$200 range.

In normal times, I usually go for bent shapes, Peterson, Savinelli, Nording, Neerup, etc, also in that price range.

I like the rusticated/sandblast bowls much better too.
I have to part ways on this preference. I like a variety of shapes, and while many rusticated or sandblast pipes do look very nice, I only own one.

My aesthetic sense is dominated by a good smooth "straight grained" pipe.

Just my preference.

As for maker preferences: I like Claudio Cavicchi and Tim George (TRG).
I also like Uncle Arthur's pipes... But don't tell him I said so... He might get the big head. :D

I can't take my mind off of my 4 Mario Grandi pipes; let alone my hands. If I were a custom pipe maker, my pipes would be quite similar to his. Not only do they look good, they smoke good; of course. I also love my GBD, my Nording and etc... I have total of maybe... 30. I love sandblasts. I love a lot of texture; a lot of information! I do also have a couple of bents that I take pleasure in smoking.
Oh... and I can't forget my wonderful 11 1/2" churchwarden. I get nice, cool, even and tasteful smokes from that one. And... it just looks and feels the friggin coolest to hold!

I have to say I like my Peterson's the best. My Butz-Choquin Daccord tends to smoke a little warm and doesn't clench very well. My Brindisi 605 is a wonderful pipe. It's I think more of a bent apple shape. I love bent pipes. Love the style, and they seem to clench more easily for me. I also do love the look of my Peterson Aran 268 though. It's a wonderful shape, Dublin I think, with a stem that's bent ever so slightly. Almost reminds me of the style they used for the clay pipes in the Sherlock Holmes movie with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. Freehands have grown on me over the last year or so. I love my only freehand I have currently, some cheap housemade one I originally bought just for rotation until it turned out to smoke so well. The look of bulldogs/rhodesians are growing on me as well. I love the look and balance on my Peterson Aran B5. Not too big on the sandblast/rustic pipes. Love the look of the churchwardens, that was actually my first pipe. Well I've probably blabbered on enough for one post.

I love these Dr Plumb nose warmers!! Great for sticking in the pocket and taking them along when out cycling or walking. I have a Peterson Church Warden for relaxing in the potting shed but now thinking of getting a collection of clays ?? quite fancy the idea of smoking a clay church warden...
( Excuse the pipe stand, its home made and not quite finished!! )

Excuse what? That thing looks great! It looks to me like it would take a Japanese Sugi finish real nicely. But heck I may just love that finishing technique. :P
Also the number one thing that I look for in a pipe...love at first sight.

I look for design and prefer pipes with thick walls. I have a few pipes of preference, 2 are Dejarnett pipes and 1 is a Winslow, I smoke 4-5 bowls a day. My collection is about 45 strong and try to rotate them but I still gravitate back to my favorites. I have some free time next weekend & I will try to post some pictures.

The pipe has to be a great smoker -- but that's a given. It has to feel comfortable in both hand and mouth; and its appearance has to compliment my appearance.

Lovely pipes cortez! The lines on that GBD Popular are beautiful and that curve on the bit really puts the gravy on the mashed potatoes for me! :D

I have that Savinelli Pisa and it's one of my favorites, both for it's cool smoke and graceful style. I generally find myself drawn to Italian makers but maintain a rotation from many wonderful countries. That's part of my continued interest in the pipe.
