When I was 17 years old, I had a part-time job at a local community bank. Like most people in banking, I started out serving clients as a bank teller. There was this amazing old fellow, an Attorney, who would always come in smelling like fine pipe smoke. My Grandfather was a smoker, so for me, the smell triggered great thoughts and memories. One day I ask the man about his smoking and instantly his face lit up, he started to tell me how great pipe smoking is, how he loved his Brigham pipes and how he wished more youngsters would smoke a pipe rather than cigarettes. Previous to this I had smoked a few cigars but I felt good tobacco was always in my blood, I was always intrigued by it, I think this was passed on from my Granddad, tobacco just got along extremely well with my paternal roots.
After this chat with the Attorney, I went out and bought an inexpensive rusticated Brigham system pipe and some aromatic tobacco. I told the Attorney about it and he was excited to pass down some of his knowledge. He gifted me a Czech tool, a pipe sleeve and a wind cap. He also passed on some tips about pipe smoking. The one tip I remember clearly is... "Never smoke down to the bottom of the bowl." He was adamant that one should only smoke 2/3rds to 3/4 of the tobacco because the tobacco at the bottom of the bowl acts like filter and grabs a lot of the tars and "bad stuff" from the tobacco.
To make a long story short, my first experience with pipe smoking didn't catch on. I blame the tobacco selection. I bought a rum topped aromatic that wasn't very good and after trying 10-15 bowls, I just wasn't hooked. It wasn't until I was about 30 years old that a friend re-introduced me to pipe smoking and gifted me some fine VAs (such as McCranie's red ribbon) that I really started to appreciate the pipe. The period in between I was mostly a once a week cigar smoker and even though I still smoke the occasional cigar in the summer or on vacation, my passion lies with pipe tobacco, especially fine VAs and Balkan blends.
I know that Mr. Davidoff advised only smoking a cigar half way but most people just accused him of telling people this to sell more cigars. Personally, I never believed his advice was to sell more cigars, because whether you smoke a cigar for 30 minutes or 45 minutes doesn't necessarily increase you cigar consumption.
I have usually stuck by the attorney's rule and only smoked my pipes about 3/4s of the way down. I notice when I do occasionally smoke right to the bottom, the flavor definitely changes and my mouth feels (for lack of a better word) tarry afterwards for up to 12 hours. When I stick to the Attorney's rule, sometimes even 15-20 minutes after the smoke I can barely notice that I smoked a pipe, my mouth feels un-abused.
I know this is one of those 'your mileage may vary' things and everyone will have their own opinion. I'm curious of the opinions of the community here...
A few of my local pipe smoking friends have mentioned that it's wasteful. "You are wasting good tobacco!" My rebuttal has always been... whether I smoke down 1/2 way, 3/4s or all the way to the bottom, the goal is the most enjoyable smoke... if discarding the last 1/4 of the bowl leads to a better experience, the value might actually be increased, not diminished.
Let your opinions fly, I'm curious if anyone else follows this technique taught to me by the old Attorney.

Great story!
I let the tobacco and pipe tell me when to stop - they, and my palette, let me know when enough is enough.
Some combinations are great right down to the very end... Other times I'll let it go at the half way mark.
Cigars are the same. I've smoked some down to where I need a toothpick to hold the remains... Others get tossed after an inch.

I don't give it much thought, but I guess I usually end up with at least some dottle -- whether the cause is too much moisture, palate fatigue, difficulty in getting an even re-light, or sucking ash because the draft hole is drilled too high above the bottom of the bowl.
Some folks are obsessive-compulsive about it because they want to build up a layer of protective cake on the bottom of the bowl; but as Russ Ouellette once observed, if you never smoke a bowl down that far, then you really don't need cake down there, do you.

9mm that is a great story, thanks for sharing that. Interesting as I always have some left over in my bowl when I'm 'done', whether that be I don't get any more flavour or its hard to relight. I'm going to pretend its another filter now - thanks!

It varies. When it stops being enjoyable, I stop doing it.
Usually get 90% there. though. I like the "tarry dregs", especially with the ODF and such.
Honestly, it's heat that usually stops me.

And also too plus another. I'm not "wasting good tobacco" if it tastes like ashes & makes me go "Blech!" Every bowl/blend/smoke permutation is different. If I start to not like it, that's the end. :)

When smoking an aromatic, you should follow your legal council's advice. It will keep you out of prison or from facing harsh penalties.
When smoking a straight Virginia that stoves as you smoke it towards the bottom, if you ditch that dottle before reaching Nirvana, you might want to consult your religious council.
I smoke most blends to the bottom, with only faint taste of ash as the smoke stops, letting me know I am done. But, latakia blends and aros, just really depend on which blend. Most aros do not gain any appeal as they stove. And, whether a latakia blend is going to stove well is about 50/50. For me, there is no clear cut all or none answer for most pipe questions. Each bowl is unique in the way everything comes together and the stars align or the waters recede.

I go entirely by taste. If things are tasting good, I'll stay with it. They go sour, I'll end the smoke and discard any unburnt tobacco. This ends up going down to the ash completely about 15% of the time especially in cobs, and smoking down into the last quarter of the bowl most times, and rarely burning any less than 3/4's of the bowl, unless the bowl is sour or acrid for some other reason. I would never discard unburnt tobacco on principle. I'm too cheap, I mean thrifty.

I have yet to smoke a pure Virginia, but 90% of the time I'm tossing the last 15% or so as either too wet, too hot, or both.

I agree it’s the enjoyment of a bowl, but with tobacco being so expensive I can’t afford to waste it.

Great advice for those who smoke tobacco that has more moisture in it than ideal (the way most tobacco is out of a fresh tin: too moist to smoke to the heel.)
Of course, MMV, and smoke it how you like it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, and three dozen other aphorisms.
