Never smoked before I started smoking cigars in my 30s. Started this awesome hobby(addiction) at 44(8 months ago). My wife asks me (as I'm banished to the basement)"who the heck starts smoking this late in life?" Now I'm always searching for a way to relax and this is so far the best to me. My question is, have any of my brothers and sisters on the PM forum started "piping" late? And do you get any flak from your significant other?

Lately yours seems to be a recurring theme.

There are lot more "Late Bloomers" than you might realize.

Don't sweat it.

We're just glad you have "seen the light"! :D

Yes I started late in life 47. I've always thought of pipe smoking as an older mans game. Guess I felt that I would look stupid smoking at an eariler age...just a self esteem problem for me I guess.

I've been smoking a pipe for 50 years and married for 48. My wife is a saint (as long as I stay away from heavy English tobaccos).
Re your question: Better late than never.

Late bloomer here too. Smoked cigars on and off through my 20's, 30's. But at 40, I bought an estate pipe to smoke cigar nubs in....not a great idea btw. Anyway, started on the slippery slope of pipes and enjoy it very much. Not much in the way of grief from the wife either.

I started at 36. I have the occasional cigar or cigarello while out with friends or camping. I decided that pipes where better and jumped in. I'm lucky if I get more than 1 smoke a week, but that's ok with me; I've enjoyed every one!
But I did get some pretty significant eye rolls when I broke the news to my GF. She's an ex-smoker too, so really...I got it double. Luckily, she sees that it's a hobby, not a habit and really likes the lingering smell, so it's all good :)

Its funny you mention a self esteem issue. Im 29 and it seems like there is a ton of young pipers getting into the hobby as of late. I was a little weirded out the first few times I smoked in public, Being a young fella I felt like people thought I was toking up something else. I cant help but think I am the only young piper with this fear. My biggest fear was a cop with a chip on his shoulder to give me a hard time because im young and smoking a pipe in public. That however, has yet to happen. Dont sweat it that you took a while to get into the hobby your self, Just enjoy it. You are now amongst your Fellow Piper Brethren.

My wife wanted a pipe and tobacco. I told her no, it's not good for you. (She was looking at my Dunhills when she asked for a pipe).

Good to see that I'm not alone in being a late starter. Foggy, that's awesome, LOL. Btw, the wife doesn't give me too much greif. Just the occasional health comment is all.

I started recently (I'm age 50). To me it shows you are still open to new things as opposed to those (slightly) older folks who are stuck in a rut.
Fortunately for me, my wife supports this new hobby of mine - even though she doesn't like the smell it leaves in the house (working on that). The health issues IMHO aren't anything to get overly worried about.
Anyway, personally I was born to smoke something, it's in my nature and the pipe couldn't be a better fit. Good luck with your new hobby.

At 45, I had tried two cigaretts and two cigars in my life. All horrible experiences. Then I tried a pipe and decided that I enjoy the rest, taste, and ritual of smoking a pipe. My wife is OK with it, but thinks it is one of my less brillant ideas.

I had toyed with the pipe in my teens, but it didn't 'take', mainly cuz I was a young idiot. Picked it up again at 47. I'm just enjoying the ride.
