After it was suggested to me recently, I ordered an ounce of Lane HGL to try out. It contains burley, cavendish, Virgina, and the above mentioned Latakia. I came to try it looking for variations on an English tobacco I like--John Bull.
I tried it and like it pretty well. I plan to order more, and make it one of my regulars.
But the surprising part to me is what Paul Harvey might have called "the rest of the story." I learned before ordering that this blend was Herman Lane's favorite, hence the name HGL--Herman's initials. What I didn't learn until after smoking it, and was surprised to find out, is that HGL is RLP-6 with Latakia added. Just that simple. But it doesn't taste like the aromatic blend at all, and I've been smoking RLP-6 for awhile now, as well as Captain Black (Is Captain Black RLP-6? I'll leave that debate for others.)
So if you like aromatics but want to branch out into something with a little Latakia, you my try HGL from Lane. It would be easy enough to adjust it to your liking if you want to reduce the Latakia.
