When I light my pipe I manage to smoke about 40 minutes with little or no relighting. After 40 or so minutes, when I need to relight, it seems I am constantly relighting. I still have plenty of tobacco in the bowl. I have been tamping lightly and the draw is still easy. Any suggestions?

That was my problem for a while. But then after learning to dumping my ash instead of tamping it,now my bowls stay lit till the heel 95% of the time.

Dump that ash like a bad habit . I try to never retamp and just stir the tobacco gently with the poker . Scratching just the very top surface of it . You can also gently blow through the stem turning youself into a bellows to rekindle the fire . If all else fails just remember everybody relights .
