Hey Guys, I am planning to make a pipe to enter in the contest for the Kansas City show. They recommend the following, "I strongly recommend that you pick up the Fall 2012 issue of Pipes and tobaccos magazine and read the article about the contest. The interview with the judges (Greg Pease, Tad Gage & George Dibos) will give you excellent insight into what the judges are looking for and what they consider important ." Does anyone have this issue, I tried to back order it but couldn't find it. If anyone could share what the article said that would be very helpful.

Nobody gets this mag? Well I went ahead and drilled my pipe and got the rough shape cut out. The holes lined up just right so, phew, that is a relief, now to the shaping. I'm going to buy a different kind of belt sander this week to shape this one. Also picked out a cool black and white flecked piece of lucite for the stem. I think I'm going to stain the pipe too which will be a first for me, been doing some experiments with some red stain.

I will see if I can find you a copy of the article. I will tell you that the article hammers away at "attention to detail". The judges go over the entries with and extremely practiced eye.
I bought the pipe that Andy Peterson submitted to the 2012 contest. Andy was a winner in the 2010 contest. It was just gorgeous. I then ran into George Dibos at the local smoke shop. I asked him to give me a critique of the pipe. It was absolutely mind blowing the level of detail the judges look at. I asked him why they went that deep and George said it was because the caliber of pipes is so good that they have to look that carefully to distinguish the very best from the rest.
If you have any other questions on the pipe contest or the show itself just PM me.

Sorry Shaintiques, I was given a copy of the "Spring 2011" issue...

Only because I was "briefly" mentioned in one of the articles. :D
