What is the opinion of you fellas here about old Kaywoodies from the 30's to the '70's? Are they good smokers?

I think they're much better than new ones. I have an author from the early 70's and its a great smoker

mustang - as great as the old Kaywoodies are, I've had great success with recent production too. The old old KWs were competition with Dunhill back then. At the KW XMas Slow Smoking events, I end up with a competition pipe made by KW and several of these are among my best puffers. I also got a POY handmade by Bill Feuerbach and it is excellent. These BF handmades are best buys in artisan pipes - he certainly has the choice of briar - there are big bins of raw briar at the factory, so there are tens of thousands of stummels right there. The main reason I haven't picked up a bunch more is that there are pretty big and I tend now towards small Gp3s. Interestingly, I also nabbed a few small production pipes from the displays there - I like those as tasting pipes at pipe shows. Despite their humble pedigrees, several of them have been quite excellent as puffers too.

I owned only 1 Kaywoodie, purchased new in about 1966. It was a Prime Grain H9 Hi-Bole. It was kinda gurgly because of the stinger; and the bowl wall was too thin for me -- about 1/8" thick, so the bowl got too hot to really enjoy the smoke. It was a $9.99 peg-board pipe, IYKWIM; and I sold it on eBay a couple of years ago for $79.00, I think because it looked very much like a LOTR style pipe.

As it has been mentioned many times the older Kaywoodies were often compared to dunhills and still are. Go for one you wont be upset.

Especially since you can get one from the 1940s or 1950s for around $15-20 US on the bay, and in good condition, too. I happen to know that cajundad here on the forums has come into some old Kaywoodies. Shoot him a PM and I bet he'll work something out with you!
If you shop on the Bay, look for ones that have the 4-hole stinger and the black club logo inside the white spot. Flame Grains, Meerschaum-lined and Connoisseurs are the best of the line from those days. Those were made from 1947-1953 and will be great smokers.
I smoke mine with the stinger intact, as I don't want to chop up a 60 year old pipe and they smoke very well. I did buy one with the stinger already chopped and it smokes fine, though.

In my opinion, most 40+ yr old pipes, out smoke many of today's much more expensive pipes. I think I would rather have a 40yr old Kaywoodie than a brand new Pete, Sav. etc.

+1 nsfisher, I would much rather have a 30+ year old pipe than any new one I have tried. I have several Kaywoodies form the 30's and 40's that are great smokers.

As this subject comes up alot, I feel I've said it very often. But, I have a mid 50's Prince of Wales Kaywoodie Standard with stinger intact and it smokes great. Its the first pipe I ever bought. And is in regular rotation as well.

I enjoy one of my 2 kaywoodies from the 60s/70s and I'm cleaning a "Drinkless" from pre-1936 right now. For a bottom-end pipe from that time the '30s it really surprises me how it looks as it has no fills and fairly nice grain.

~1937-38 carburetor Bulldog. Smoke like a champ.
Had to do some slight rehab on the stem (it was overclocked), and EJames gave it a polish long after this pic was taken. In fantastic condition, as well.

Walker Briar Works dressed mine up. Made them look brand new! If you have a low budget and want to enjoy the hobby, old Kaywoodies are the way to go. For $15 to $25 you can get a vintage pipe that smokes like $100 pipes. I never had gurgling issues with the stingers on, but if you did, you can take the stem off and get it with a cleaner, even when the pipe is hot, thanks to the metal fitting.
