I'm often intrigued by how fast inventories of U.S. factory pipes sell. A few weeks ago, I bought a Kaywoodie from former sponsor retailer PC, which is quite nice. At the time, they had maybe thirty of forty pipes on offer. Just out of curiosity, I went back to the page recently, and there was only one series left, and when I clicked on that, all of the pipes were also out of stock. This happens familiarly with Kaywoodie, Dr. Grabow, Yello-Bole, and Medico. They still make these pipes, but apparently in sparing quantities such that they can't meet the demand. There must be a delicate balance, to sell all you make, but to make as many as you can sell. U.S. factory pipe makers mostly have a production staff, not a battalion of marketing folks, so it appears they wing it and do the best they can. So if you like those old style pipes, buy them when you see them, because they don't linger long. Most of them that I have bought are well over their price point in quality.

I am horrible with remembering names. And, I am most embarrassed, because I think of him as a friend, close as you can be across several social media formats. His real name is Nathan... Graywoodie, GrayCrash... uggggg, my feeble mind... I just can't remember his handle here at PM. I'm sorry Nate.

...but we have a member who has taken on retailing Kaywoodies, from the artist. Greywoodie, Your Kaywoodie Provider - https://greywoodie.com/ Check with him on specific types of these pipes. He can hook you up, or at least he will know the skinny on what's up with what you may be looking for. Hopefully, he will post in this thread.

I have a quick (maybe slightly off topic) Kaywoodie question:

Can someone explain why the inside of my bowl is "glazed" and shiny?

I purchased an unsmoked bulldog a few months ago online, but it wasn't until I got my hands on it did I notice this unusual aspect. Usually, if I'm not mistaken, pipes arrive either with an unfinished bowl or with a darker, usually black, finished interior...

Any information would be greatly appreciated. TIA <

lukas', my best guess is that this is a slightly different version of the coating they use to prevent burn-out in the bowl. I always like the pipes that come without any of that, since they've never presented a problem, but I doubt the glazed look is a problem -- a little too much, or too little, or a slightly different formulation.

is it a new production pipe or an unsmoked older pipe?
can you post a pic? I have an older Kaywoodie with screw tenon and the inside of the bowl was raw wood before I smoked it.

Nathan Davis aka crashthegrey, who was even interviewed by Kevin on his "radio" show.

Don't have a pic right now but it's a screw tenon. I don't know how else to describe it right now but it's got this shiny slippery hard clear coating...

If you can get a pic maybe we could tell... is the whole thing including in the bowl lacquered?

Great choice though!
thanks! I have been putting that one in the cart and then leaving the site for weeks. I figured I needed to just pull the trigger and try it. $70.. not too bad.

I love catching old stock Kaywoodies on the Bay app. I think it's a Redroot or something like that. Was unsmoked. It's a great smoker and holds about a lb ?.. It's a really large Dublin. Just have to keep your eyes open. I just missed a relief Kay in the last couple days. It was a damn fine pipe.

I have one Kaywoodie stinger pipe I bought new when the Drinkless Ruf-Tone series was still produced, and the only pipe I own or use with a stinger. It smokes well and only takes a few seconds more to wipe off the stinger after each smoke. Surprisingly good. You can't remove the stinger; it is part of the screw-on stem. Now all the new Kaywoodie are push bit.

because the ones with the stinger....... no.
Many don't like the stingers. Personally I've never had an issue. Some of the push in versions with the stinger are deals hiding. You can remove the stinger and have a really nice pipe for $25.. Again, I've never had an issue but I'm not trying to burn down a bowl in 5 minutes either. Just not as quick to clean.

I believe this is made by Comoy .. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. The London made push in pipes are real gems. That london made 55 I believe was a push in and went dirt cheap while made by a great company.
