I have to say, seeing these pipe pics is the best thing about this forum. Very cool pipe. Thanks for sharing.

I've never heard of Old Nellie pipes until I read your post. How did you find out about Joe Nelson and his burners?
Your new skater is lovely and I hope your grandkids fight over it.
Fnord.

Thanks guys. I just smoked a bowl in it. Wow is all I can say. Everything I've heard about Old Nellie's and Joe's method of oil curing are spot on. This pipe smoked like a dream with the first bowl. And my goodness what a large bowl it has.. broad... second light and I was off.. all the way till the end. Absolutely had no idea there was nothing left to smoke.. that's how smooth this pipe was. Sorry, but I'm still kinda in shock. I didn't know.. just didn't know. What an epiphany!
Fnord. I heard about him on the pipesmagazine radio show. They interviewed him. Then I checked him out and checked out his pipes. Anybody that spends a week making a pipe these days has my full attention. He's a perfectionist and and artist. I bought my first Old Nellie within 2 hours of researching. Best $ I've spent so far.. and I've spent quite a bit. I would HIGHLY recommend him!

Congrats!! That is a sweet.
I think American pipe makers have definitely evolved to the point where we can easily complete on the world's stage.

Ditto Peck's comments. I have a pair of Old Nellie pipes in my regular rotation and they smoke wonderfully. Joe Nelson is as fine a gentleman as there is in this hobby and I always enjoy spending time with him at pipe shows. He's a big old drink of water, too. So, I'd say nice things about him anyway.

I've held a couple of Old Nellie pipes, they are nicely done. The radio show interview was also very interesting. Joe is one of the few who oil-cures his briar. He's on my short list.
I really like the stem work on that one!

Joe has been around for awhile. He also makes handmade guitars and fiddles. His entry on to the GKCPC 2012 Carving Contest (Bulldog family) was easily selected as a winner and had we had such a thing would probably have won "Best in Show".
