This was kind of a spontaneous St paddy's day pipe purchase. Had to spend st paddy's day working since 7am to get caught up on a pile of stuff that accumulated while I was on vacation. Was feeling deprived when an e-mail came in from JT Cooke announcing a new Dublin for sale. So I picked it up. How could I not? I'm Irish. It's a Dublin. It's St. Patrick's day. This is Cooke number 2 for me and I can't wait. My ultimate goal is to have 7 Cookes, but that is a long way off. I may need help explaining this one to the wife.

Unfortunately, experience has taught me that all his pipes go quick. If you hum and haw, it will be gone. It's actually a pain because you really have to decide in a split instance whether you are going to buy. i guess you could hit buy and not follow through, but I think you'd have to be an ass to do that (IMHO).

It's funny Roth, because I was thinking the same thing when I was staring at this picture earlier today - ie. are those the actual contours of the grain or just exceptionally skilled blast work. From my other cook, I can say it is a bit of both, though mostly the former. Not sure about this one. You need to look at the pipe closely and define the underlying grain to figure out where you are on this continuum with respect to a particular pipe.

How do his pipes smoke and how is the engineering?
The one I have is engineered perfectly and is a fantastic smoke. No surprise he would have that down -he's been making pipes since the early 70s.

That is my favorite Cooke shape and one day I will own one that looks that great. Peck you dog, I am drooling over that one, congrats buddy. As soon as you get it you have to fire it up and let us know how it smokes. I know people who have them and say they are fantastic smokers. Yes you do have about 1 minute to decide if you like one of his pipes or it will be gone. They sell within 2 minutes almost every time they are listed, it is an amazing thing to watch.

I may be breaking a rule on here as I'm not sure if I'm allowed to link to articles on other sites, so if there's a problem with this then please delete this, but I came across the following interview with JT Cook that was done around 2 years ago. I thought it was very interesting - in particular the discussion about the evolution of his blast work, but note that he gives no real specifics - he's too smart to divulge the "secret sauce" to the world.

Thanks for the interview link Peck. I enjoyed reading the interview. Learning about pipes and their makers is not against the rules in my opinion.
