Another one bites the dust. I just purchased the last of this tobacco on behalf of a few gentlemen who frequent another establishment. When I was requested to furnish further supplies I was saddened to learn that it had ceased production and was no longer available. Probably due to the new EU rules and a fairly niche market for the stuff. I suppose it will live on as the subject of fond memories and crazy Ebay prices for sealed packages. Speaking of which it just so happens that..................

Not really too much of a surprise,

it was always a bit difficult to find and didn't really have much of a following,

and the 25g pouches were overpriced too.
But it was pretty good stuff.
I had a fling with it,

http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/a-match-made-in-heaven-highland-sliced

and that satiated my curiosity,

but too $$$ to seek out and cellar.
Here's what it looked like in the good 'ol days...

A while back I did a short profile on brother Robert,

and John will the the subject of the next upcoming edition

in the Antiquarian Nicotiana Brittanica series.

...was just thinking I should have clarified,

HS wasn't really difficult to find online,

but on the ground in the home country it wasn't very well distributed, rarely seen at the newsagent or grocers, and for the most part I'd reckon it had only a regional market, up North and in Scotland, so it failed to really ever get any special historical aura halo about it in any big way like the more nationally distributed and popular baccies did.
Too bad I can't find any pix of the old baccy itself,

in its original form it appears to have been a sliced roll,

or spun cut,

interesting.
In the newer STG version, they just made bastardized flakes out of laziness and ease of production,

I'd reckon.
Here's a very luverly old showcard display piece:

The display came on the market fairly recently and is still up for sale,

I almost bought it but my logical brain beat out my romantic heart,

thankfully!
I did check my bank account though just to see if I could squeeze it in the budget,

but in the end I couldn't justify such a purchase with myself.
If anyone may be interested,

it can be had for 50 quid

John Sinclair was one of the first marijuana martyrs. I remember the rallying cry: "Free John Sinclair!"

I don't watch many yootoob pipe-related vids, but a recent thread had me looking a bit after Stuff & Things and TokingTommy was mentioned and those vids were pretty cool to watch this morning while I have my coffee and a bowl of PPP - I can definitely see the appeal inherent in videos and can relate to why some people gravitate in that direction, but my preference is written word...
...anyway,

I came across a really good review of Highland Sliced,

this guy does it up proper methinks, as far as keeping my attention and always staying focused on point,

as well as providing an accurate description, he provides dense rich useful information as well.
Good stuff methinks.

edit to an earlier statement:

That was pure speculation on my part, and BentBob mentioned on a recent thread that HS was readily available at many shops, and he is a man on the ground with first-hand experience who therefore trumps my wild speculation...
...I dunno why they discontinued it?
I wrote an email to STG and never got a response.

I like Highland Sliced. It's not a powerhouse, but it is pleasant and it doesn't need a bunch of prep, just works right out of the pouch. And now it's gone...
Liked the review. It was focuesd and on subject, unlike almost all other youtube reviews, which spend half or more of their length on the reviewer's incoherent ramblings concerning the decidedly uninteresting events of his dreary personal life.

LOL
A most true observation,

that's been my experience as well!
...like okay, hey man, it's been like 2:34 minutes and all I've heard is that your boss is a tyrant and even that was hard to make out due to excessive wind noise and like then I skip ahead and the actual damn "review" is like right at the end after massive rambling with often poor enunciation and then they say something like " this is good, you should try it!" LOL Thanks for being so helpful there yootoob dood,

where's the dislike button?

...more Fugs.
Johnny Pissoff Meets the Red Angel is one of my fave studio tracks from them,

but this live version is a real piss take and actually life-confirming for me,

LOL

good stuff and Ed Sanders remains a central cultural hero for me,

plus,

the Fugs,

how cool is that for a band name?

Troy have you seen the Will's Woodbine cigarette review where the guy lights and then promptly chucks his lungs up? That was my go to brand you know and I didn't find them too harsh.

As I recall Woodbines were a favorite smoke of Tristan Farnon (Siegfried's younger brother), one of the characters in James Herriot's "All Creatures Great and Small" books.
Indeed - also the preferred smoke of Frank McCourt's mother in Angela's Ashes
