Some of you may remember a previous post of mine concerning this vintage 7 oz. tin of John Middleton's Hickory tobacco. This tin came in a pipe lot I had purchased but had been opened. My guess is it was originally purchased in the late 50's to early 60's judging by art work of the tin. The tobacco was as dry as Autumn leaves.
I used the towel/paper towel method of rehydrating as mentioned in the following article in Pipes Magazine.

After about a month of rehydrating using distilled water I am happy to report back the method has worked and the moisture content and fine cut of the leaf made it easy to pack. I am not one to give reviews especially for this tobacco as I have nothing to compare it to. This is a blend of Burley and Virginia. A genuine blend of superb tobaccos, decidedly different, pleasantly mild and aromatic.
Of course this Hickory has been aging well for 40-50 years or so. I find it really mild and to smoke quite cool. I've smoked around 1 oz. of the 7 to date and find myself really enjoying it. It taste like really good tobaccos. The tin note is of nutty (Hickory) fruitiness and comes through in the flavor of the smoke as well. I find it to have a very pleasant taste. I just wish I could compare it to a Hickory of a younger age because this is as mellow as it gets! Like a fine wine aged with time. I'll be reaching for this in place of the Carter Hall. Six ounces to go.
