...threw a last minute bid in on this pipe because I really like the unusual shape, and it's only 4", and it only weighs 18g

--- it was made in 2010...
John Crosby pipe - sandblast small nosewarmer
I have the P&T issue with the article about him,

but does anyone here have any experience with his work?
Looking forward to testing this thing out!

I have no experience with his work, but I love the look of that Pipe!
Congratulations on the new purchase. Be sure to let us know how she smokes.

Call it your little Hummingbird
I like that!
Now that you mention it,

the lines do remind me of a hummingbird...

So,

I hope it's a humdinger of a hummingbird and smokes like sweet honey!

:)

I had a similar small pipe some years ago in a red blast with red cumberland stem. It was great in every respect. I decided it was too small and traded it. But if I found a good deal on another Crosby I'd snatch it up. They don't come up much. I'd say that indicates the value people place on them.

Thanks for the input xrundog,

good to hear.
Although decidedly Danish influenced,

I think he has successfully developed his own thang too.

A Zulu-egg shape bowl with the Humming bird shank profile plus sub-20 gram weight - I love this piece of work!

Congrats MLC! :puffy:

The same seller also had a dropdead gorgeous Karsten Tarp pipe that's a real stunner.
I love these kind of bulldogs,

but I still don't have one!

Hard to find a blasted version

and they're usually really expensive re:

Ilsted, Manduela, Tao etc etc
I think the angular squat facet styled dogs are my favorite modern Danish shapes,

it kills the puffyfish!

:P
A jawdropper.

I dug up a pic of the Crosby I had. It was too small to look right sticking out of my head. But it was a nice well made pipe. A more traditional shape than yours I think. I don't think I've ever seen a bad looking Crosby.

Sweet!
Thanks for posting the picture,

looks great I think.
He also has a particular way with his stems,

very elegant curves 'n such.
What year was yours?

I bought that pipe from grayfoxonline. Crosby used to sell there and post on the forums. I think it was '07.

I made a joke that if one turned many pipes of his upside down, they looked like penises. Maybe it was a subliminal thing. I don't think he saw the humor in that.

I had one of Johns pipes from the same vintage and source as Tim. A fine pipe, I think I traded it away for a Radice.
I don't think he saw the humor in that.
He didn't, but the rest of us sure as hell did. Remember 'Raw Meat" ?

I always liked what Gary Schrier wrote in his book in the section about pipesmoking myths...
Myth: The pipe is a phallic symbol.
Isn't everything?
That said,

the most flagrantly penile pipe I've ever seen is honored to Baldo Baldi,

as seen in this thread:

Awesome pipe and a great score. It's reminiscent of his balloon shape referenced in an article on Neil's Blog about nose warmers. I haven't stumbled across many of his pipes but those I've seen are noteworthy, particularly these gracile little numbers. I see the danish influence but the pipe doesn't make the impression of derivative, rather it seems a (necessary imo) pruning or refinement.
In short, the guy makes some sleek pipes and show the aesthetic sensibility of an artist not a cabin craftsmen, all to my eye, of course. A very under appreciated pipe maker. Wish he made more.

Pictures of darker pipes don't do them justice. I have no idea of the 'retail' value of your nice looking Hummingbird Nosewarmer, but, I will say that that stem has incredibly perfectly aligned striations and melds perfectly with the shape.

Very well put.
I am in complete agreement.
Thanks for your comments.
The example below provides for greater clarity to see the elegance of the hybrid (what would be the word to describe it?) saddle stem which just totally works and compliments the swooping shank - I love how the bottom profile lines of the shape is both subtle and dramatic simultaneously, no easy feat to pull off I'd say - in combination with the pinched shank which flares in graceful balance...
I diggit.
