Thought I would share some interesting shots of two new billiards produced by Danish carver Jess Chonowitsch.
These have a lot of the iconic hallmarks commonly ascribed to his pipes, including the rounded top of the bowl.

Actually layinpipe, I was throwing these out there so that whoever gets my name in the forum Secret Santa this year will know what they should get me.

If those pipes were for sale on the SP website, they have been sold because I can't seem to find them.

Damn! Well, if they have been sold, then I expect my Secret Santa to send these pics off to Jess to have duplicates made. It would also be nice if you could throw in some tobacco - but no Mixture 79 this time!

Hey, now! I went way the hell out of my way to find you those vintage tins of M79! I figured that they were the one and only thing pipe and tobacciana related that you hadn't already stockpiled in your bunker secret lair compound ashram fortress of pipeitude.
This year I'll just send along one of those two boring Billiards you posted up top. At least then I know you'll be happy.

EDIT - meh amateurish work at best... Those Billiards are more brandy than billiard, and that smooth is positively porky where the shank meets bowl... But if that's what you like.

They are truly beautiful. I love the tiger grain on the smooth and - like John - could almost be tempted to bamboo by the other. When I see art like those I know in my deepest soul that I could never begin to carve pipes.

Pat, I was hoping that the design flaws will allow you to secure a deal when you go shopping for me. I was looking out for your pocket book buddy. I know you have a new hungry mouth to feed. Would you prefer it if I instead chose something perfect?

Up until this moment, I had you pegged as a man of exquisite taste...
Perfection has a price, and to afford it there is always plasma donation.

Already on it, i'll just need your name, address, phone number(s), spare key to your house and a couple day window of time where no one will be home. You know, just to do the whole "santa" thing while i am delivering the goods? Trust me, it will add to the surprise.

How is it that famous carvers seem to have the best wood, best grain? Have you ever seen an S. Bang that wasn't very handsome?

4nogginsmike - that is a great question. One the one hand, I assume some may have their pick of the briar litter. On the other hand, maybe it;s just technique, and they know how to expose the grain. It's probably a combination of both.

I understand that they are really popular pipes and very well made, but I have never been a fan of contrast staining to that extent. Looks tacky to me.

I could go for the sand blasted one though.

Yeah, really tacky.
I think you should dump them.
Or
You can mail them to me and I will dump them for you. I have plenty of room in my garbage pail...

Ok Peck thanks, i'll send Harris you're kind regards. Hopefully his sight will be back in action by then, but if not it will be easy pickins, lol. I mean an easy delivery, cough cough.
