Greetings, my fellow pipe aficionados. It's Mardi Gras season in New Orleans and, for all those who cannot join in the festivities, I'm here to spread all the Epicurean joy and Dionysian excess that is the carnival season.
Exclusive to the members of the Pipesmagazine.com forum, I hereby christian the Krewe d'Cavendish. No, it's not the most original name I've concocted, but at least it's alliterative.
We don't have floats or marching bands or horses, namely because we're spread out all over the place. Plus, it's hard to throw beads or doubloons while smoking -- we might knock our pipes out of our mouths! Instead, like great Comus and Momus, we forgo the floats and throws and skip straight to ceremony, booze, and tobacco. We are refined, but in our own way. We come from all walks of life, and the only masks we wear are the faces we've been given.
Cordial to those who accept us, we accept all members who join our forum, discriminating only against those who would infringe upon our right to puff. That is, however, if we cannot convert them with a good blend and a fine pipe.
It is customary with most Krewes to have Royalty (chosen from the Krewe) and a Grand Marshal(celebrity guest leader). By default, Kevin is our Krewe's king (if not for his site, we wouldn't have a place to gab). The grand marshal, however, is up for choosing by group consensus, so get to nominating!
So with with six days of the 2012 carnival season remaining, light up a bowl of your favorite blend, embrace your brothers and sisters, put on some tunes, and toast the greatest delights life has to offer. Laissez les bons temps rouler, and Happy Mardi Gras!
P.S. - I'm not sure if I needed permission to post a topic like this. It was done in the spirit of good fun.

As a proud resident of the City of Detroit, and as a Pole by marriage if not by blood, I hereby offer paczki to all!

Paczki -- looks close enough to a king cake. Let that be our signature confection! Stuff a plastic baby in one and pass 'em out!*
And I have to throw a vote in for Russ, as well. I love his blends, and if it weren't for his articles I wouldn't understand or appreciate half of tobacciana knowledge that I do.
* History Lesson: The plastic baby is a Mardi Gras king cake tradition. In older times, if an unmarried woman or man got the then wooden or gilded baby in their piece of king cake, marriage was in their future. If a married woman got the baby, well, soon there would be a real one on the way. Nowadays, if you get the baby, you buy the next king cake.

Paczki are wonderful. Incredibly bad for you, but yummy. My wife will be in line at a Polish bakery to get some - I will eat one. That's enough - I'll need a good half hour on a cross-trainer at the Y to come close to burning it off!
{Paczki story: My middle daughter grew up around 'em - part of her life. She goes off to college at Illinois Wesleyan, in Bloomington, Ill. She walks into the cafeteria on Fat Tuesday, and says, "Where are the paczki?" No one knew what she was talking about. We shipped her some the next year, and by her junior year she met a local through work that helped her get her fix. )

My youngest lives in New Orleans and today is her 24th birthday. I suspect she'll have a memorable birthday. She always complained about a February birthday, but now living in NOLA, it seems like a bonus to the kick off of Mardi-Gras. Enjoy your week!
I'll join the Krewe - do we get Stomper-like jackets? (lets forgo the red hot pants...)

Jackets are offered but optional.
Edit: Stompers is a reference to the 610 Stompers, recently featured in the Macy's Day Parade. They're a bunch of middle aged men living a "Flashdance" fantasy. They're hilarious.

Ok, but headbands are a must! Oh yeah, I do like the "K" in Krewe, Kewl!
I just called the daughter. She's at a parade wearing a pink shirt that says "I'm the birthday Girl" and waiting for her favorite crew "The Muses". She's a teacher and they have off for the next nine days. Her school is on the parade route, so it's apparently too crazy to try and hold class. Sounds like good times! (although dad is missing his baby tonight...)

Great picture. Here's to hoping she had a happy birthday.
And here's a picture of the female equivalent to the aforementioned 610 Stompers. Meet the Pussyfooters:

They are a huge attraction of the Muses Parade, but come in second to the Krewe's top throw: shoes!

The sign they're holding is proof that no matter what is intended, however innocent or innocuous, interpretation is 90% of definition. Of course, maybe they meant what we're thinking...
In which case... well, I'm speechless
By the way: we need more nominations/votes for the Grand Marshal of Krewe d'Cavendish. We've got two for Russ and one for Uncle Arthur. Let's get some democracy rolling before someone makes it illegal!

Cajunguy: more history lesson ;-)
King's cake was originally served at Epiphany. I grew up with Epiphany cake.... Which was interesting to come here and find King's cake. I'll see if I can find my pictures of this years epiphany cakes at our house here. We still do it with the kids every year. Although now it's kids and daughter in laws, son in laws and grand kids.. I have to make two now since one is no longer enough
And I second either uncle Arthur (who's missing) or Mr.O

With three days left until Mardi Gras day, here's some videos of two traditional holiday songs that are played at almost every parade. If you know of any Mardi Gras tunes that you like, feel free to post them.

And here's one that goes out to the Big Chiefs of our Mardi Gras Indians:

It's Mardi Gras day! Time for the Krewe to Roll.
Looks like we have a tie between Russ O and Uncle Arthur for our Grand Marshals. Congrats to both.
In city, it looks like a perfect day for the celebration. Kings Rex and Zulu are getting ready to start their routes here shortly. People are already lining the streets, hoping for beads, doubloons, or whatever they can grab. Others already have their hands full with food and drink.
For those who cannot join us, truly, we wish you were here, especially my brothers and sisters of the briar. The thread will get very picture intensive, as I'll post what I can to share our festivities from different areas of the city.
Once more, happy Mardi Gras, everyone. I hope your day is full of fun.

Happy Fat Tuesday! I came home from NJ this evening and found the daughter had sent us a Haydel Bakery King Cake. I saved the baby for the wife's piece, she is out of town this evening. Some beads and a Mardi Gras parade book. Thanks Chelsea!
